I have a Panasonic PV-GS300. The software it came with does not work to burn a DVD that will actually play on a DVD player. It only copies the video as a DATA file, which can be viewed on the PC but not the DVD player.
Any suggestions on how to convert this?

You need to capture as DV-AVI over firewire, you can't use USB.

Once captured you can load it into many programs. I'd sugest downloading the trial version of Ulead Video Studio. It's multiple step process but VS will take you through the whole thing.

  5. I suspect you have no idea what you are in for here. The files you recorded will need to be (1) copied to the PC, probably via firewire, then (2) converted to a DVD compatible MPEG2 format, then (3) plopped into a DVD authoring program that will create the complete DVD structure, and finally (4) burned to a DVD.

hogberg above gave you some sample proggies for each of those steps. It is not really something most (regular) people expected they'd be going through when they bought their miniDV camcorders. I end up doing this conversion bit for my friends and family every now and then.

A simpler way, though with potentially (or as many on here would say, highly probably) worse video encoding would be to plug your miniDV camera directly into a standalone DVD Recorder (i.e. the VCR type devices, not the PC drives). Many DVD Recorders have firewire inputs for just this purpose. You may find this solution much more palatable.
