just go thru device manager and click on the ide channel that the dvd burner is connected to. or use nero info tool which will show you if DMA is enabled or not. here's a shot of nero info tool:

  3. thanks but i don't ask IF dma is enabled or not, instead i need a number: which udma mode is active, e.g. udma 0, 1 , 2, etc (1 through 6)

then go through your device manager to find out if your dvd burner is UDMA 2 or 4 or 5. you'll have to go thru the IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLERS to find out the UDMA. some dvd burners like the SATA SAMSUNG S203B is UDMA 5.

can it be that one ide channel, holding 2 devices, runs one of its devices at one speed (udma mode) and second at another? or it always picks the slowest one and runs both at that speed?

what he posted is what i was trying to have you do from the hardware tab of device manager. what is it that you're trying to accomplish? hard drives and dvd burners will need to have udma enabled in order to work correctly. hard drives are usually udma 5, some dvd burners are udma 2 or 4.
