I reformatted my cousins old Dell Dimension 4550. Everything went well until I tried to install the Broadcom Ethernet driver which I got from the dell website. Every time i run the install, it jumps to 100% and says complete, but device manager still fails to recognize it. The Broadcom diagnostic tool also fails to recognize its presence. Any suggestions?

Did you install the motherboard chipset drivers first?
Are you sure its the Broadcom and not a Intel?
I always install drivers in this order
