  1. Hi _MrC_,

I was converting an older film that was shot in 1.6667:1 (5:3). What I am getting is padding on the top which gives it a stretched out image instead of getting padding on the sides. Is there anyway that I can correct this in Avstodvd without changing the aspect ratio to 1.77:1 (16:9)? The preview in the right click menu looks spot on. I noticed that the image in the dvd menu is 4:3 instead of the more appropriate 16:9. Is that where the problem lies? Thank you in advance

you can set preferences to PAD the sides rather than crop the top and bottom, do this before you load the file

you can also edit the file info, of the loaded file and set the aspect ratio to what ever you desire

you might want to set it to 5:3 as avstodvd might be misinterpreting what the current ratio is

Why stretched out image? Top/Bottom padding does not cause image distorsion. A2D, by default, does not alter the proportion of the source video frame.

If you want to get padding on the left-right sides, than you have no choice: you must select 16:9 as output aspect ratio.

    1. Load the title
    2. Go to 'Edit Title' > 'Video'
    3. Toggle off 'Auto Video Setup'
    4. Select 'Widescreen (16:9)' as 'Video Aspect Ratio'

Otherwise if you want a 4:3 output, than you have to crop on the left/right side ('Edit Title' > 'AviSynth' > 'Crop', play with 'Visual Crop' until you get 4:3 ratio)

I should have been clearer. If I play the dvd folder with VLC on the computer everything is looks as it should. I uploaded a picture of the dvd paused on the tv ( the problem is that it is a B&W picture and dark) the black bars are on the top and bottom and the image looks like it is a 2.35:1 AR. Avstodvd is set to Widescreen. If I run the same file on Convertxtodvd merge the vobs with vobmerge and run it on avstodvd to get the same menu and burn and play the dvd the black bars are on the sides.

too many steps for a simple mind like me. I have not got what is the source, what you are going to achieve, in what way.

    @theewizard

could be the Icons.zip file is corrupted? Have you tried to download a fresh copy of AVStoDVD?

I want to convert a HEVC-encoded MKV to DVD-5, but as soon as HCenc starts, I get those messages and the process stops shortly after that.

ERROR, can't process AVS file, wait for Avisynth error message.
    ERROR, script error: syntax error

I have the lastest version of the program and all the codecs in "preferred directshow codecs setup" have been set to LAV filters. Almost everything else is set to default.

Should I just try another AVS Video Source filter instead of A2DSource?

    Hi Ygramul,

    more info is required...
Can you post your AVStoDVD log file, and maybe upload a sample of the source file?
And yes, you should try FFMpegSource instead of A2DSource.

    MediaInfo: http://pastebin.com/NgBwXP01

Things I changed: selected just the second audio track and added hardcoded subs from a .txt file.

The MediaInfo text looks quite OK, but I need the log file from AVStoDVD (it should be in the output folder).
To me it looks more like a HCenc issue than a DirectShow filter problem. Can you try to use FFMpeg instead of HC? Does the preview work?

I just downloaded a couple HEVC samples, and they all worked using DirectShow (or A2DSource) with LAVFilters. Forcing FFMpegSource did not work, got the error message: No decoder for this format.

Here's the log. I'm asking questions first because of how long encoding takes.

Here's the log for an FFMpeg encode. For some reason the subs didn't get hardcoded (which is important to me), but everything else seems fine.

  17. There is an error in the AviSynth script (a fresh bug with txt subtitles, thanks for the report!).

Locate the line where there is the (wrong) statement:

    Code:
    Video = Video"E:\Faust.txt")
    and manually change it to:

    Code:
    Video = Video.TextSub("E:\Faust.txt")
Moreover you have to add this line at the beginning of the AviSynth script:

    Code:
    LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files (x86)\AVStoDVD\VobSub\VSFilter.dll")
Another option, if you do not want to edit the AviSynth script, is to convert the "Faust.txt" to SubRip format ("Faust.srt"), which is better for AVStoDVD. You can use SubtitleCreator to convert from txt to srt.

Who the hell still makes subs in .txt, anyway? The Poles, that's who.

A new HC just dropped. Is there any good reason to try this, or will AVS be moving to it ? (Maybe too soon to know, unless _MrC_ had some advance access to it . . . ?)

This new HCenc version is already one month old. And yes, it works well with AVStoDVD as long as you have AviSynth 2.60 installed (2.58 is NOT supported).

OTOH the changes in this new version as described in the changelog do not really matter for AVStoDVD. (DVD has no use for the new color spaces, only 4:2:0 is supported, and resolution is limited to 720 x 480/576). If Hank also optimized the quality for DVD encodes is not known so far, you have to test it for yourself...

    Main changes:
The SoX based upmix routines now integrate into AVStoDVD in a fully transparent way

FFMpegSource and HEVC (H.265) source files

ffms2 v. 2.17 which comes with AVStoDVD cannot decode HEVC source files. To handle these sources you have to update ffms2.

You can either use the official Myrsloik builds at GitHub, or the C-plugin builds by qyot27.

The official builds should work right out of the box (I could not test them because they won't run on my old CPU). The C-plugin builds can also be used transparently by AVStoDVD, but it requires a little tweaking. BTW you find the latest build here:
    http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1739037#post1739037

If anyone is interested in using a qyot27 build, let me know...

  26. I updated to the latest 2.8.3. I am using the ffmpeg vbr mod and problems. I was getting a "cannot create thumbnails" Without it it works fine. The second problem is that not a single file after the first use loads without a can't 'read frame rate' that 2.8.2 has no problems with. These updates never go smoothly for me.

  27. MrC, thank you once again for the new version!
And of course thank you Manolito for updating your excellent plugin!

One suggestion popped into my mind:
I noticed that AVStoDVD uses Dmix6Stereo-function as a default downmix-method. Could this default downmix-method be user-selectable? Downmix.avsi has also functions for Pro Logic and Pro Logic II –matrixed stereo, and there is even a possibility to choose, whether LFE is included or not.
However, choosing a suitable downmix-method isn’t really a big problem, because that can be achieved by editing the AviSynth-script.

    Hi JukeboxJezabel,

your problems sound like you overinstalled the latest version over an older version.

    From the FAQ:
Q1.7 When I download a new release, should I uninstall a previous installed one?
    A: Yes, that's a better choice.
Uninstalling the old version is always the safest way. If your previous version was the no-install version, you also must remove the A2D reg key under HKCU/Software.

In any case if you did overinstall, my ff_vbr and Wavi_Mod plugins will be destroyed.

The other problem with not recognizing the source frame rate seems to be unrelated. A2D uses MediaInfo to detect the frame rate, and your error only pops up if MediaInfo cannot detect it. Do you have MediaInfo also installed separately from A2D? If yes, run it and see if the frame rate gets detected. Or upgrade MediaInfo.dll in the AVStoDVD\Lib folder to the current version 0.7.77 (you have to rename the downloaded DLL).

For me the only occasion when A2D consistently does not detect the frame rate is when my source is an MKV file created by ffmpeg. MKVs created with mkvmerge always work fine.

I'd like to report something that might be important: I can't add hardsubs if I use FFMpeg safe mode. They just don't get embedded, that's it. Tried .srt and .ssa.

Had no trouble after switching to FFMPeg CBR single pass.
