Actually it looked tougher when reading it! Just after doing the first method and it seems to have worked a treat. I just could not figure out how to add a second to the end of the first audio track. Just gave up and added it to the start of the second. Found this guide too:

    https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/311331-How-to-fix-audio-out-of-sync-in-a-DVD-withou...y-reconverting

Thanks for your help! One last question...is it not ready to be burned now after Muxman? According to the guide it is. Why would I need to feed it into Avs2DVD?

Yes, it can be burned to disc after reauthoring with Muxman. But what was the purpose of using AVS2DVD in the first place? I figured you wanted to shrink the size to a DVD5. Also, didn't you create some basic menus with AVS2DVD? Or some chapters? I don't think your Muxman version has any chapters, does it? Although it's easy enough to create some for use in Muxman (File->Import Chapters, something like that). Or maybe none of that is important to you.

I used avs2dvd because instead of a DVD with two titles I wanted just one. I was advised to try vobmerge and then put the output of that into avs2dvd! At the moment after Muxman it's only about 3.3GB. I don't want any menus. Actually chapters might be handy though. Thanks for all your help!

Ideally you'd add the two DVD titles separately and have AVS2DVD create 2 separate titles for them, as with the original DVD. But I don't know whether or not that's possible when using AVS2DVD. _MrC_ can tell you.
thats what i do, i just drop 2 or more titles in avs2dvd,
    and create the dvd
just click the 'play all' button and they play consecutively, one after the other

why don't you attach here the AVStoDVD project log files, they contains useful info on your input sources, and we can give you more precise instructions how to perform your process at best.

  7. Tried converting some mkv files for a friend, but it failed, and said something about excessive bitrate. Any help would be welcome. Fairly certain I used all the default settings, except changing the output folder and setting it to burn to DVD. I tried editing the settings to 6500 for video and 128 for audio, still crashed. Also, if it has anything to do with it, the files are from an external hard drive.

  8. Quite interesting: in my experience HCenc is very accurate in bitrate targeting.

I would suggest to try with 'FFmpeg CBR 1-pass' profile, maybe with title 1 only to speed up the test and see if there are still issues. Don't worry too much about video quality: @7000 kbps FFmpeg CBR and HCenc VBR are very close.

A disproportionate quantity of the projects that fail (here) seem to involve MKV sources.
    (But you knew that already . . . . )

I still don't have all that good an idea as to what the limits may be for reasonably good results. I just had to fit two 42 minute titles onto a DVD-5, including subs. The project specs were showing a bit over 5,000 kbps (for HCenc), and I was expecting it to come out looking not that good. But, it looks fine on the monitor. We'll see if that result holds up, on a 42" or larger tv screen.
When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form.

  10. It still failed, got the excessive bitrate thing again. I guess the problem lies in the "muxing audio/video" part. I tried changing the settings to 4000 video average bitrate, with 2500 for lower average and 6000 for higher average. Used FFmpeg CBR 1-Pass for video encoding.

For audio, it was 96/128? kbps.

Also, thanks for trying to help.

i know i gonna take a HIT for saying this
MKV container is TO forgiving , you can put almost any codec and bitrate video & audio into it

this is great for "ONE WAY" conversion from DVD to play on your media PC, and many people love it

its FREAKING terrible, for reconversion later to another format, although the defenders can't seem to understand this point

i avoid all MKV, i had to many hassles with it, i simply refuse use it or work with MKV files

last try: switch from 'A2DSource' to 'FFMpegSource' in 'Preferences'/'AviSynth' (do that *before* adding the mkv title to the project).

If you get another fail, do you have the possibility to uploade the mkv anywhere to test it?

  13. Thank you very much, it converted fine now. It's really nice to see a developer actively helping on the forums. And yeah, MKV is a kinda problematic format.

I've seen something like this myself, it crashed when the subs were included, but ran to completion if the subs were
removed from the project. As above, it crashed in batchmux/muxman.

In my case, switching to ffmpegsource didn't affect the outcome.
I noticed in the case where the project failed, batchmux.bat and batchmux.log were created and opened up in a visible window.
However, in the case that worked, those files never showed up. What decides if batchmux runs or not?

Here's dvd_4 and dvd_5, dvd_4 worked and those batchmux files were not present.

if standard BatchMux/Muxman routine (BatchMux directly called by the code) fails, then the BatchMux.bat file is created and run, because it can redirect the BatchMux echo to an output log file (DVD_X_BatchMux.log). In that way we can read the BatchMux.log file (much more useful than Muxman.log) and try to understand what's going on with the failed authoring.

Some years ago I have asked to Sir Didymus (BatchMux author) to add the log file generation as an option, but unfortunately the development of BatchMux is "on hold".

Could you please send me the 'DVD_1_Title_01_Durarara 04_1.sup' and 'DVD_1_Title_02_Durarara 05_1.sup' files, the first seems to be problematic, the latter to be ok.

Yes, exactly. Thank you. Many cases of this here, either involving the subs or audio -- or both -- over various versions of AVS. (Although some of the AVS components may not have changed.) And sometimes, the MKV works just fine. Go figure. For a while, I thought that it was related to use of an AVC codec, and perhaps it was, but I've just about given up on trying to work the cause out. Nearly always, if full vid + aud resource files were generated from a partially completed project, up to where it bombed out, I was able to manually finish it, by separately adding a discrete .Srt file obtained from Opensubtitles or somewhere else, in a second pass. Or, if there was an incomplete or no audio file, I could generate one separately via AudioExtractor, and then do likewise.

I not sure if _MrC_ was able to replicate any of this from the examples I made available. In the most recent case where I did this, it had happened here, but did not happen for him.

This remains a mysterious mess. Whenever I get another MKV file, I'm thinking 'Here we go again.' However, it continues to be a popular and prevalent format, so I guess we're stuck.

when you get another issue with mkv sources please:

    1. Post the project log file
    2. Take a screenshot of GraphStudio rendering of the source mkv
    3. In case, add the link to the mkv

Trying to replicate the issue is the only way to understand and (hopefully) solve.

    Hi MrC,
thanks for explaining, it makes sense when you watch it. You see the normal muxman status window
and it gets about half way and abruptly disappears. Immediately followed by the batch window.

Here's the complete set of subtitle files that appeared in the project temp folder:

I have tried with a small sample mkv (FFmpeg CBR @ 8500kbps) and both the sup files, but Muxman did not complain. Do you have the possibility to upload the original mkv file?

    MrC,
    here's the link (140 MB)
    http://www.mediafire.com/download/yjdqbj3oz4y8mba/Durarara_04.zip

Out of interest, I repeated your experiment - took an unrelated avi file of a similar length (about 25 minutes)
and created project with the troublesome SUP file. I got the same crash in Muxman.

I tried another thing also; used the old Vobsub/subresync program to convert the troublesome SSA file to SRT.
Used this new file in the AVStoDVD project and it finished cleanly this time
Here are the srt files in case you want to compare them.

got the issue: one of the SSA file (04) has some 'Comment' events. Current SSA->SRT routine in AVStoDVD does not handle those events, converting them to standard subtitles as they are 'Dialogue' events. Some of the 'Comments' events have '0:00:00.00,0:00:00.00' duration. The conversions to SRT and then to SUP lead to a overflow subtitle.

Next 2.7.1 release will fix that issue (see attachment).

Thanks for the bug report and for the hint.

Many of the .Srt files may have something at the beginning &/or end of the file, crediting (for example) Opensubtitles.Com, possibly the translator(s), etc., and this is not tied to any timing or onscreen content. Does that constitute a 'comment', possibly throwing this process off ?

(We've also seen things like some Bold or Italics markers in the file causing problems in the past . . . . )

send me a sample SRT with those credits, I will see if the current 'Fix SRT' routine already handle them. If not, I will surely update it.

    Hi _MrC_,

I'll keep a lookout for such samples to send you. That said, I just used one like that, and it sailed right through, working with no problems. (Had to d/l it separately for a second try, after the included .Sub / .Idx pairs seemed to have been processed by AVS, but yielded zero English subs with the Swedish language track.) This makes it hard to have much confidence that we've identified most of the variables.

i have one question 'not regarding' the current discussion

can avisynth version utilized by avs2dvd, use any of the scripts and filters that are posted in other editing/conversion threads

can a denoise or sharping script , deinterlacing (yadif) etc.. be inserted in and used when authoring a dvd

i know the scripts can be edited, but how much can be done

FWIW, version 2.7.0 using mpeg2 source files with compliant 5.1 ac3 audio, it insisted on downmixing to two channels until I replaced ffmpeg.exe with the latest version.

    Hi MrC, question about two audio streams. Playing around further with the MKV file we looked at recently;
the file has English and Japanese audio. Selecting both sources when the file is added to the project results
in English being the default. Both languages are in the DVD and the Japanese can be selected.

I wanted to try and make the default language Japanese, but I'm having some difficulty. I modified the Preferences/authoring
to select Japanese as the Primary language and English as the secondary - but when I create the DVD, English is still
the default. Is there something further I need to do?

I was using FFmpeg for video source and A2Dsource for audio. Switched to FFmpeg for both, but no effect.
    Thanks,
    Dave

of course you can edit the AviSynth script. If you need assistance how to build a valid script, just post here your try.

    @sambat

could you please post here the project log file with the original ffmpeg release.

    @dave

'Preferences'/'Authoring' is the right place to select primary and secondary audio and subs languages. What are you using to play the resulting DVD? Are you sure there is no default setting to English language in that player? Finally... post here the project log file.
