for some reason the source d2v file has been recognized to have a DAR (Display Aspect Ratio) of 2.37. Just tweak it to 1.778 ('Title'/'Edit Source Title Info'/'Video Display Aspect Ratio') and you will not get the letterboxing effect anymore.

I read it a little myself, somebody pointed out that they were able to use odd sizes before, and the reply was that
under the covers Avisynth was altering it to fit the needs of the source format. For example,
addborders(0,51,0,51) was being changed (internally) to
addborders(0,50,0,52)

Now they going to flag it as an error. I wonder what the status is of 2.60? It's been in alpha for a long time now.
The reason I installed 2.60 was because I was playing around with AvsPmod, and had some strange error messages
with the old 2.58, it cleared them up when using the alpha release.

Very interesting. And not documented! I can easily adjust the AviSynth script generation routine to include that "internal fix", so that AviSynth 2.6 will not complain anymore.

Hi There,

Fairly new to video but have had great success with AVStoDVD previously.

Recently I have stumbled into a problem and wonder if anyone can help?

I have been capturing my old VHSs and now plan to put them on DVD.

Problem

I am having trouble encoding anything longer than about 2hours 5mins. When I try to HCenc opens and an error appears in the info panel - "ERROR, can't open dbs file, invalid path?"

I have tried different combinations of avi files but the only pattern I can see is when the total run time goes over abot 2hours 5 mins the error occurs.

Example
Single avi file 2 hours - OK
Single avi file 2 hours 30 mins - ERROR
Multiple avi files (total length) 2 hours 2 mins OK
Multiple avi files (total length) 2 hours 10 mins ERROR

I have attached the log file and a screen dump of the error.

Any help is much appreciated.

Just wanted to say this software is fantastic tried pretty much everything out there and this worked in every way I expected... Including hardcoding subtitles in mkv and converting to DVD. Just amazing work!! Thank you

As suggested I tried putting the output folder onto a different drive but I still had the same problem.

I fiddled around with a few things, did a new clean install and still got the same error. I then discovered everything works fine if I run AVStoDVD as an administrator. No Error, everything works perfectly now when I run as administrator (except I cannot drag and drop files into AVStoDVD only use the 'Add Title button').
If I don't run as an administrator I still get the aforementioned "ERROR, can't open dbs file, invalid path?" error.

As far as I am concerned the issue is fully resolved for me but I thought I'd share this FYI and for anyone else who may run into the problem.

Using the current Alpha most of the time lately.
I had a strong feeling this project was going to bomb out, probably on the audio, and sure enough it did. This .Mkv file had the following characteristics: 1920 x 1080 Res., AVC, a DTS track, and a FLAC track, plus 4 IDX tracks. (Probably could have skipped the latter entirely, since this was in English. It's just one more known point of failure, and could easily have bombed out also at that later part of the processing.) I'm going to do what I usually do in this case now -- extract the audio manually with Audio Extractor.

[EDIT: Well, that doesn't seem to have worked out so well. In the assets, AVS yielded a 201 Mb. .Ac3 file for this. If that was a complete track, it may have balked at the 2nd. (FLAC) track . . . which, when I listen to it from the original .Mkv file in VLC Player seems to be the same contents. Audio Extractor at first did not seem to recognize the .Mkv as an accepted file type, but when I forced the issue, it produced a 57 Mb. .Ac3 file -- presumably from just that first track. Given the size differential, I think I'd go with the AVS version. If this now does not work, or proves to be a royal pain, I may just try this file from the WD Live. I bought another of those, some two years later. It seems to have different firmware and a new UI, plus the ability to handle some file types that were a 'No Go' on the earlier version.]

Hi _MrC_,

I used the .ac3 + .m2v asset files that AVS generated, before it crashed. (Before I got your reply, and without changing any settings.) This yielded a dvd. What remains to be seen is how it may compare to the 8Gb. source .Mkv, if I can play that from the WD Live. Might not have the chance to check that for several days.

[EDIT: An odd result. The original .Mkv file kept freezing at around the 2 min. mark, when I tried to play it via the WD Live. The AVS-rendered dvd looked good, sounded good, and played fine start to finish. VG docu too, unreleased here near as I can tell.]

Hi MrC,
This alpha looks great - thanks for the new features. There's only one thing I've seen so far,
on a couple of encodes I've done, the chapters disappeared. I had the project file saved.
I opened it up, edit/title and on the chapters tab "auto chapters setup" was selected, but there
were no chapters at all in the box below.
De-selecting and then re-selecting "auto chapters", and all the chapters came back.

The only thing I can think of that I may have done to these encodes is that earlier I used trim on
the avisynth tab to do a test encode of a small section and then reset to the whole file.
The second thing, both projects were saved after being setup and encoded later.

I'm using the latest version of avs2dvd and currently it's all going well. However being new to this I was wondering if there's an easy to follow guide anywhere about the creation of dvd menu's using the menu tools in avs2dvd. The help section tells me about what does what but doesn't give examples or explain what some of the terms mean or how they impact on the finished project. It's a newbie I know but it sure would help.

When encoding a small test file to dvd (I'm sending it to file not burning it) the FFmeg window flash's a "Guessed channel layout for input stream" message in yellow telling me it guessed stereo. Also at the bottom of that window before it disappears there's a line in red (red is never good!). Unfortunately it's gone before I can get to it and I can't find any logs with it in. Also the quality of the output video is not as good as the test file slight jerking and doesn't seem as sharp. Can I get a little help as I'm new to this and it's a little confusing. The test file is a ts file captured from a haupaugge pvr at 8mbits and I cut it down using videotovideo in copy mode (which works wonderfully BTW).

Was the resulting DVD good? The source audio was stereo . AVStoDVD is set up to use the existing DVD compliant audio.
(It is demuxed and inserted, not re-encoded).

you cannot expect to obtain an output equal to the source, remember that downscaling from HD (1280x720) to SD (720x576) will always compromise the sharpness of the picture.

You may obtain an higher quality output by forcing HCenc instead of FFmpeg ('Edit Title'/'Video') and if you prefer sharper edges, you can play with Sharpness filter ('Edit Title'/'AviSynth').

About the warning messages (yellow and red) by FFmpeg, you can ignore them, if FFmpeg starts anyway.

For extra sharpness I like the matrix "selur high datarate". You have to use HCenc to incorporate it.
This matrix seems to work well when the bitrate is over 5000 kbps, but your mileage may vary.

In AVStoDVD you select "Edit encoder command parameters at runtime". When the project starts
the "HCenc command INI file" window will open. Delete the line that says
*matrix mpeg
and replace it with this whole thing (then close the file) :

I've seen those warning messages several times myself.

In regard to forcing HCenc, is there some easy override for doing that ? (I have default profiles set for bitrates of 2500 - 4500, 4500 - 6500, 6500 - 8500, as I think was once suggested here.)

There is something else I've posted about before, I think without getting any responsive or satisfactory answer, though it might not have been in this thread. Sometimes I have a project with 3 hours or longer runtime. The end result is going to be a dvd that is noticeably larger than a DVD-9, since I strive to retain a very good PQ. I mean, like say 10 Gb. to 15 Gb.

With something up to around 8.5 Gb, my preferred method would be to load it into DVD Shrink and split it precisely where I wanted to with Shrink's Reauthor Mode, into two DVD-5s. But Shrink locks up with a larger size than this, and DVD-Fab -- which has a disc-split feature -- also chokes on it. Typically, subtitles must be applied to the source, so splitting the sourcefile first with some tool won't work. (And I'd rather not get into having to edit the .Srt or other subs file, and its timings.) Is it possible, and how difficult would it be, for you to implement a "divided output as two or more DVDs" feature ? In order to be maximally useful, I think there would need to be some preview and precise control over where the splits occur. (I usually opt for a darker scene or daytime establishing shot with less movement and no dialogue.)

Go to 'Preferences'/'Video', select your profile of choice and then press the lock icon. FAQ/Video/Q3.5

Have you tried to reduce the minimum video bitrate? 'Preferences'/'Video', then select 500 kbps as 'Lower Avg BitRate'.
