  1. Hi,

I'm currently rendering a PAL avi file (cineform) to NTSC dvd. I'd like to use another Authoring suite to build a dvd menu so i am rendering to demux mpeg2.

Mainconcept had given me poor picture quality with artifacts everywhere, so i've been experimenting with avstodvd. Picture quality is great, it's the audio thats causing me a problem.

On half of my projects there is no audio, avstodvd has crashed at the audio encoding stage and the start pulldown stage. Here is the log from one crash.

Log file created by AVStoDVD Release 2.5.1
    <>

The only issue i have with the Avstodvd rendered file is the audio on some sections where i've used music (Mp3). I had different results with different media players.

GOM player - Audio on MP3 parts is badly distorted. Mainconcept rendered a better audio when i compared the same track on GOM player.
VLC - MP3 Audio ok but distorts when volume is raised
WMP - MP3 Audio is fine...even when volume is raised

I burned a dvd and the audio sounds ok on TV, so it is not really an issue, though i would be curious to know whats happening?

My real issue is getting avstodvd to stop crashing on (or near) audio encoding.

    Thanks for any help.

  3. Hi chris100

On 1st attempt you have selected Wavi+Aften as audio AC3 encoder (default option) and the program has crashed. Reason could be that Wavi had some problem in providing the raw PCM to Aften.

On 2nd attempt you have changed audio encoder to FFmpeg+Aften and the project ended w/o (apparent) errors. That should enforce the above statement about Wavi.

    My suggestions:

    1. Upgrade to AVStoDVD release 2.6.0

    2. Try with 'FFmpeg (AviSynth)' or 'FFmpeg (Safe Mode)' as audio AC3 encoder setting.

  4. Thanks MrC.

Is the FFMpeg+Aften shown as AC Audio Encoder: 1 ?

I did have a crash with that also, although it was at the pulldown stage...

  5. No, using the last AVStoDVD release, they are the 4th and 5th option for AC3 audio encoder.

BTW, it is a bit worrisome (and not related to audio) that in one attempt you were able to complete the pulldown step, in another attempt you were not...

    Hi _MrC_,

I still have crashes during the audio-handling phase (in perhaps as many as 1 out of every 4 cases), no matter which Audio options were selected, and a similar incidence of crashes during the subtitle phase. For the latter, I've taken to manually deleting any of that "< / >" formatting that may occur in the file, prior to running the job. In one recent case -- a 3-hour movie -- the .Srt file was something like 230K. in size, and I'm theorizing that that could have been a factor. I could send some logs, but they continue to be very uninformative about either type of crash. (I think the encoders also sometimes have a fatal problem with some AVC content.)

Or maybe the particular projects I happen to be doing just manage to cross into this trouble zone . . . ?

Nevertheless, I'm glad to report that your workaround of using SubtitleCreator to manually convert a troublesome .Srt to .Sup format has a perfect record of success in my experience. That's very good, though I have no idea why or how it works, or why it may be necessary. When an AVS job halts at the point of putting up that long SubtitleCreator Command Line Explanation screen, I just think 'Never mind all that, I know what to do instead.' Call up the program separately, and use the menu. I'm not gonna bother messing around with command line arguments in the middle of an AVS job. But this way works, it's easy enough, and gets everything to the Muxman phase, so that's fine.

Again, in my experience with this, if you make it as far as the Muxman phase, you're just about guaranteed to be home free.

about audio crashes, I can only suggest you to send me the project log files. I know that they are not 100% informative, but they are usually a good start. You can do some inquiry by yourself using the 'AviSynth Frameserving Check' and 'Build DirectShow Filters Graph' option under 'Codecs'.

About troublesome srt files, please send them to me, I can analyze them and, if possible and feasibile, add the unsupported chars to the AVStoDVD srt fixing routine.

    MrC:

May I suggest you add audio loudness normalization using ffmpeg? This is how I do it right now:

    Code:
    ffmpeg.exe" -threads 2 -i "E:\AUDIO.DTS" -filter_complex ebur128 -f null -y nul
This gives me the following info:

    Code:
    Integrated loudness:
    I: -27.2 LUFS
    Threshold: -39.0 LUFS

    Loudness range:
    LRA: 19.0 LU
    Threshold: -49.0 LUFS
    LRA low: -41.5 LUFS
    LRA high: -22.5 LUFS
    Now I do -23 - I, in this case -23 - (-27.2) = 4.20dB

    So we do next:

    Code:
    ffmpeg.exe" -threads 2 -i "AUDIO.DTS" -af "volume= 4.20dB" AUDIO.AC3
And we have the audio with standard EBU R128 normalized loudness! Check http://tech.ebu.ch/loudness for EBU info.

I am using your excellent program just to get a m2v file that I use as input for my own custom process. I may have some suggestions regarding automatic subtitle height above the horizontal lower black bar, and using subtitles for widescreen and pan and scan modes for 16:9, if you are interested.

  9. is there a way to make a menu show chapter thumbnails instead of title thumbnails? i have a dvd with only one title but multiple chapters, and i tried digging through the menus in avstodvd, as well as looking online for an answer, but i couldn't find anything. anybody have any ideas? i'm not a scripting kind of girl, so i'm not really comfortable diving in and trying to make changes... this is new software to me, and although it works pretty well, i'm still a bit overwhelmed... =(

first of all thanks for the suggestion about audio Normalization. I will surely give it a look. AVStoDVD already uses AviSynth Normalize() command to performe that task. Before reading the documentation you linked, what would be the differences between the FFmpeg ebur128 approach and the AviSynth approach?

About the subs positioning suggestions, please share them here on the forum.

    Avisynth Normalize vs EBU R128

Basically Normalize does a peak normalization, while EBU R128 is a loudness normalization, that is, the perceived volume of a track by humans.

I guess the shortest and less technical doument would be this one: http://tech.ebu.ch/docs/techreview/trev_2010-Q3_loudness_Camerer.pdf

    Hi _MrC_,

O.K., will try to do that.

I have a different question. Just had a case where I discovered that the dialog track is off somewhat from good sync with the actors' speaking. (No other language, or PAL vs. NTSC type issues here.) Is there something I can do with the AC3 file in an attempted job re-do, once I've determined exactly what the timing discontinuity is, in order to correct this, using AVStoDVD ? If so, can you suggest the step-by-step ?

  13. It would be faster to remove the delay on your own from the final DVD.
    1. Demux (PGCDemux)
    2. Remove the delay (DelayCut)
    3. Remux (Muxman)
    4. Stick the fixed-audio-DVD back into the original (VobBlanker).

Baldrick has a guide for doing this for subtitles. Ignore the subtitles parts and follow his Method 2:

    https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/277950-How-to-add-new-subtitles-to-an-existing-DVD

Or look around in Avs2DVD for some way to set a delay (that's what it's called) if you want to start all over.

  14. @Seeker47

if you already have the DVD, follow manono instructions and you will not be unpleased. Instead, if you still have to encode the file to DVD, there are 2 scenarios.

    A.
Source title has a non-DVD compliant audio track (i.e. MP3, AAC). You can easily adjust audio delay with 'Title Edit'/'AviSynth'/'Audio'/'Delay Audio' option.

    B.
Source title has a DVD compliant audio track (i.e. AC3). Since the audio is kept by default, we must rely on BatchMux/Muxman capability to adjust audio delay, which is limited (+/-300ms). Toggle on 'Edit Encoder Command Parameters at runtime' advanced option, then, when BatchMux/Muxman command prompt comes out to be edited, add this line -a1delay 200 (assuming there is a 200ms delay).
Of course, if the delay is over +/-300ms, you have either to produce the DVD and use manono's way, or go to scenario A, re-encoding the audio track.

  15. Hello!

I'm very new to this so my apologies if this has been covered before; I have tried searching but without success.

I have three .ts files from a recorder that I am trying to make a dvd from. With just one file selected, the process works well, but when I try to put three files (episodes from the same tv series) together, the process is aborted at the dvd authoring stage. If anyone could shed any light on what I am doing wrong, I'd be very grateful.

If it helps, here are the log files.

  16. Hi Wibbers and welcome there.

BatchMux/Muxman are rejecting the DVD assets of 2nd title. We have to understand what assets are not ok. I would discard the audio track (ac3) because it has already been re-encoded. I would focus on the video track (m2v) and on the chapters file (txt).

    1. Try to force video re-encoding of title 2

    2. Check the chapters positions of title 2, you can even remove them for testing purpose.

problem occurs when choosing 4:3 menu format, does not occur when choosing 16:9 menu format

can't the window be made resizable/adjustable, can't it maintain ratio and be smaller / shorter
my display is much larger than the pictures used for the menu, the menu option is displaying the pictures larger than they really are and pushing the bottom of the window down too low, even with default background

i guess i will keep using 16;9 MENUS, even with 4:3 video

other wise i love this program, thanks for all the work and support you put into it and us

Thanks very much for your help. I eventually sorted it by deleting the chapter information on the second and third titles.

The only problem I am now getting is out of sync audio. I have tried the following trick from earlier in the thread:-

    1. Open AVStoDVD.
    2. Go to 'Preferences'/'Audio' and toggle off 'Keep AC3/DTS/MP2 DVD Compliant Audio'. Press OK.
    3. Add the new ts file to AVStoDVD.
    4. Go to 'Edit Title'/'AviSynth', toggle off 'Auto AviSynth Script'
    5. Click on 'Delay Audio' and enter "-831" (without quot marks, of course). Press OK.
    6. Start the project

This seemed to work when I was working on a single title, but when working with a DVD with three titles, the sync problem remains even though I adjust the delay (within AviSynth Delay Audio) on each title separately.

    Cheers

  19. @theewizard

that's quite strange because that window height is by design 820 pixels in standard 4:3 mode and 774 pixels in "floating" 4:3 mode.

    @Wibbers

could you please post the log file of the latter project?

  20. The only other strange thing that happens (and this is every time I use the programme) is that before the ffmpeg.exe window opens, I get a warning box opening saying something like "Warning! Title 1 Output Video duration (00:00:00) is shorter than expected duration (00:54:12)."

Log file follows. Thanks for your help.

very probably title 1 video is not properly demuxed. 2 options:

    1. Force title 1 video re-encoding ('Edit Title'/'Video', toggle off 'Auto Video Setup' and 'Video Direct Stream Copy'

    or

    2. Remux the ts file to try to fix it. You can use TsRemux tool.

Maybe this question should go in another thread, but I've already searched the forums for "Reindex AVI", not finding anything helpful. I've got a broken AVI: index either corrupt or nonexistent. MediaInfo says the file is MPEG-4 (XVID), "Advanced Simple@L5 / BVOP1 Custom Matrix" (whatever that is), Writing Application = VirtualDubMod 1.5.4.1. First, I loaded it into VLC, which could only offer to build a temporary index in Memory, and which would take quite some time, but was described as "not a fix." Next, I tried to load it into AVIDemux 2.61, which rejected it. "Attempt to open Failed."

I tried to run it through as an AVStoDVD job anyway. The PC must have gone into some heavy processing mode, judging by the fans kicking into high gear, but no window or even an icon ever opened. After about 15 minutes of nothing happening, I went into Task Mgr. and killed the processes for AVS and for QuEnc. I may see what -- if anything -- CX2D makes of this file, just for grins.

Found some mention here of DVFix and VideoFixer utilities, which I may look into. VideoRedo 4 won't touch it -- not a suitable format. Next, I tried VDUB-64, but ran into this (*)
Do I need to add some VDUB plugin for this ? (Probably 64-bit.)

May already have on hand some other tools I could try, but am open to suggestions.

The usual way is to use Virtualdub. Select file/open.
At bottom left, select "ask for extended options..." . Then select your file/open
Select rederive keyframe flags/OK (it may take a way)

Set audio and video to direct stream copy.
    File/save avi

Of course, you either need the xvid codec installed, or FFDshow

After running into a few issues with aften complaining about a buffer error, and having to restart a few encodes and manually add them to the job list again is it possible to add an option on the job window to save the job queue, so that in case of any issues the job queue be reloaded instead of having to recreate it again, especially if you leave it to run overnight or long periods and have about 15 encodes that have to be added again

So, basically can the suggestions be added to add the ability to save and load the job queue, and make the window resizeable so if you have a big job queue you can see more of it and also have the option to show job queue shown at all times so that you can see what job is currently in progress and what has been completed

    Thanks

I'll see if I can recreate the errors with aften and post the logs

Also, as a separate issue, I have a few interlaced PAL movies that have been mis-recognised as NTSC and I can't find a way of telling AVStoDVD that they are actually PAL once I load the project

    Thanks

Why have they been recognised as NTSC? What's wrong with them?

Just tried loading the file that was read as NTSC and it loads perfectly fine on my PAL (UK) system as it is actually an interlaced PAL movie when quitting AVStoDVD and restarting it so its set-up as default PAL as I'm in UK

Now, if I load an NTSC file AVStoDVD suggests as its NTSC to change the settings for an NTSC project, nothing wrong with that

If I then delete the NTSC project and load the previous PAL interlaced move as a new project it correctly recognizes it as PAL, BUT if you have a look at the avisynth script its all set up for NTSC interlaced and wants to resize the project to 720x480 which it isn't, when loaded previously as a PAL project the avisynth script contains nothing related to an NTSC project so somehow its adding code for an NTSC project when its actually PAL

All I can suggest is that left over data is confusing AVStoDVD and making it assume its NTSC when it isn't. But this only seems to happen with an interlaced source, PAL or NTSC non-interlaced work perfectly and are recognised as what they are without any issues at all
    Quote Quote
  29. Which AVStoDVD release are you using? With latest 2.6.0 I cannot replicate the issue, either with progressive or interlaced NTSC/PAL streams.
