  1. Hi All.

I have read some of the recommendations on this site about a program for the above purpose, but wanted to ask if anyone could suggest/recommend one that works with W98, does not freeze everytime I try to open it, and is simple (input file, output file and that's about it). I would also like to play the files in WMP or MPC.

I have tried Super, VLC and Riva wouldn't even open before it freezes!

    Thanks.

    Try WinFF.

  3. Thanks for the suggestion Baldrick. It looks exactly like what I was looking for but when I add a file I can play it but when I click the Convert button, nothing happens at all; no error message either. Any ideas?

Am also looking for a simple free FLV player which has controls like the slider time bar, time, stop, play, etc, and full screen. Super and WinFF doesn't seem to have any control so I am looking for a seperate player. Thanks.

  4. Just an update....the program hasn't been made to work with W98, hence the problem.

SUPER should work under Win98, although I'm not sure how well. I haven't had any need to install it on either of my two Win98 towers. What problems were you having in getting it to run?

If you don't mind command-line/console programs, you can skip programs like SUPER and WinFF, and just use ffmpeg and mencoder directly (as SUPER and WinFF are primarily just GUIs for ffmpeg, mencoder, x264, etc.). I'm not sure of the specific command lines you'd use to convert FLV to MPEG for either ffmpeg or mencoder, offhand, however.

Also, if AVISynth and VirtualDub-MPEG2 work for you, you can also write a script to stream the FLV into VDubMPEG and save as an MPEG, I believe.

  6. Thanks for your advice Ai Haibara.

For example, if I input a streaming FLV link, I get a message that 'either an Internet Media Stream is not available on on your PC, a missing file or a damaged file.'

I'm also having problem converting an FLV file to other.

I am still looking for simple flv to mpg/avi converter, but I would also like to add the requirements of being able to add many files so that I can leave the pc whilst it downloads them itself one at a time. I would like the program to convert the streaming FLV media when it is downloaded and not have to download the FLV file and then have the program take the same length of time in then converting it.

Does the command line method require one file to be added at a time, or can I add a few and then it takes care of them itself?

    Thanks.

  8. Thanks mgh. Unfortunately, some programs will not work with Windows 98. I have even emailed the writer of one of the programs who confirmed this. Thanks for the link.

I know you wanted FREE, but the best I've found that converts ANY FLV thrown at it (Super will NOT do all) is the one here:

    http://www.flvsoft.com/

I bought this one and it comes with a player as well and an FLV downloader. You can download the player and downloader for free anyway from their site. i think its made by Moyea. Very nice piece of software. I think its about $40 US, but worth every penny to me. There is a free tiral.

I don't think SUPER can download FLVs in that manner - just media like Windows Media (ASF/WMV/WMA), or RealMedia streams, maybe Quicktime.

But it's easier just to use a browser add-on to grab the videos while you're on the page and watching them, especially if you're using Firefox. I can't speak for other browsers, like Opera, though I do know there's some helper programs for Internet Explorer (haven't tried them, however).

I think someone proficient in batch-file coding could easily write something to feed an array of files to ffmpeg or mencoder. I'm many years out of practice, unfortunately.

For a quick convert (though one file at a time), you can run the FLV through FLV Extract. That should give you an AVI (no audio stream, VP(6?) or FLV compression) video stream, as well as an MP3 audio stream. If you have codecs installed to handle VP6/FLV/etc. in an AVI, you can then convert the results to whatever you want.
