  1. I'm authoring a DVD in Adobe Encore, and the video suddenly goes completely silent a few minutes in. It works fine in every other video playing/editing program I've been able to drag out of my hard drive to test with.

  2. Would people feel more willing to reply if I added "how can I fix this?"?

No. You just have to be patient, and should wait at least 24 hours before bumping.

Encore doesn't have a huge following because it still has a lot of bugs and quirks, although it is better than it used to be.

You also need to provide a lot more detail if you expect an answer. Things like :

    1. What audio format are you using ?
    2. How did you encode it ?
    3. Are you using elementary streams, mpg files or VOBs ?
    4. What else have you tried to use ?
    5. What does g-spot say about the file ?

If it is an AC3 file, try running it through AC3fix, then authoring.

  4. I used TMPGEnc to convert from an XVid AVI file.

Audio works in Screenblast Movie Studio, Windows Media Player, VLC, and PowerDVD.

There's probably a defect in the audio, regardless of playback on other softwares (which might be more forgiving)..
Encore has historically been picky with the assets required for authouring...

Truth be said, most people who use Encore aren't piddling around with some Xvid format, and are usually working with DV material...
But nonetheless, try either fixing the .AC3 file (as mentioned earlier)..
If you can't do that, then uncompress it to a .WAV file, and reimport the .WAV file into Encore, and have Encore do the proper encoding (since it's a licensed Dolby Digital encoder)...

    Edit:
OK, i just realized you've already encoded the material....
Put a screenshot of the original Xvid file, and whatever the result is, get the audio out onto a .WAV file via the tools on the left hand side...

Encore works best when letting it take the reigns of .WAV to .AC3 encoding..

I would demux the audio and video back to elementary streams and try using those. I would also take the original audio and encode it to AC3 using aften, and try that instead of mpeg-1 layer2.

  7. Turns out that the audio was loading, without giving any indication that was the case. The point of silence kept moving, so I left it overnight...audio the whole way.
