  1. My wife is teaching a Brodcast Journalism in HS where the kids make news reports and such to be aired in the school. The only camera she has right now is a students DVD camcorder due to red tape in the budget department.

I'm amazed she hasn't had issues until recently. The latest episode they did was 30 minutes and featured kids dressing up for Homecoming week with music behind the scenes as well as interviews at the beginning and end. After outputting the project some of the dress up segments are missing the background audio and the interview segments are out of sync.

Am I correct in assuming that the sync issues are caused by editing video that is already strongly compressed by the camcorder? That's my most well educated guess and I'm assuming already that is the cause. I can't come up with any reason for the missing audio though. She's using Ulead Video Studio 9, BTW.

They have been using this same carcorder for a couple months and amazingly had no issues until now. Luckily her budget just got approved yesterday and she's ordering 2 Panasonic PV-GS320 cams which I recommended.

If it is a DVD camcorder, it is most likely recording in MPEG2 format. Ulead Studio 9 is not an MPEG2 editor. Until you get a good mini-dv camera, I suggest looking for a good mpeg editor, such as Womble Mpeg editor.

  3. She uses Ulead because it's easy and she can do transitions and titles easily. She's using what is available to her at the moment. The two Panny GS-320's should be there this week and there won't be any problems after that.
