  1. I have this 39min Mpeg2 HD video I captured with Premiere from my Sony HC3 camcorder (which natively records in MPEG2 1080i 60 format). I want to cut certain clips from this video and create a new trimmed video that is 34minutes (so I delete 5min of clips) preserving the original format. I do not want to touch the format at all, so no encoding necessary. This should not take too long, as there's no encoding to a different format. I've done this with Pegasys TMPGEnc Mpeg2 Editor in about 20min, but using Premiere is taking more than 7 hours,so I reckon that I'm not doing it the most efficient way. The way I'm doing this in Premiere is in the Source Monitor as I set the In and Out points of the clips I want I drag them to the Timeline Sequence. Once all the timeline Sequence is finished I go to File/Export/Media Encoder and I set all Video/Audio parameters to match the source format (so to preserve format). So my question is, what is the best way to do this using Premiere Pro CS3 in about the same time (or less) than what Tmpgenc spends? Thanks.

Premiere Pro reconverts the video even if you select to match the source.

Why not use tmpgenc mpeg editor if you are just going to cut?

  3. Yes, I can use TMPGEnc, but of course Premiere gives you more control and options in the process, lets you add additional audio, reorder clips in the sequence, etc etc, that's why I anyway would like to know what's the best way to do this in Premiere, or is the method I applied the correct one?

If you want to edit mpeg2 in Premiere without re-encoding then you need this : http://www.mainconcept.com/site/?id=7862

Otherwise you either live with the re-encoding, or live with what the dedicated mpeg editors offer you. Womble Mpeg Wizard has some better features than tmpgenc, but is not as fully featured as Premiere.

That looks nice, but so expensive!

  6. Good suggestion if you don't need the extra features of Premiere Pro. I wonder why such an expensive program like Premiere Pro does not include this plugin, specially if it's already using Mainconcept's engine.
