I have 16:9 (Widescreen) HD video I want to upload to Youtube. They recommend encoding to a 320x240 format before uploading...is it still possble to get widescreen format viewable or will I lose some viewable area at the edges?

You can upload 16/9 but it's a fairly useless exercise, as the display is set up for 4/3.
It just means you should do letterboxing, which is fine.
