i would like to play back vob files in windows media player 11. i know that i need mpeg2 decoders, and i have them. i have the cole2k codec pack installed, which includes ffmpeg. i know vlc and windvd and similar programs exist, and that they work. i know that i can rename the file .mpg og .avi or whatever.

the problem is; when i open a vob file in windows media player it thinks that the file is located at "wmpdvd://C?contentdir=C:\Documents and Settings\me\desktop\myvobfile.vob", according to media player. and, it doesn't play, of course. to me this looks as if wmp thinks the vob file is on a dvd because it is called .vob; playing back normal dvds in wmp works fine. can this be right? and is there anyway to convince it otherwise?

    thanks to all in advance

In any folder, you can check under 'Tools>Folder Options>File Types'. Scroll down the list to VOB and see what program it's associated and change it to WMP. You might also try turning off 'autoplay' for DVD formated video. Then it may quit looking for a DVD drive.

This may not help any, but at least the association would be correct for your purposes. Other than that, give up on WMP. It's not a very good player, IMO. VLC, GOM Player, KMPlayer or Media Player Classic and others can all play back VOBs, some from even within an image file.

    And welcome to our forums.

I'd say yes, for once WMP is correct. A VOB has nothing to do on its own. It's just one of the ingredients making up a Video DVD that's lost.
