When erasing a rewrite DVD disc, is the DVD drive specific or not? Can a computer A DVD drive copy a DVD movie into a rewrite disc erased by a computer B drive?

How about the PC DVD drive verses to a DVD recorder? If a computer drive erased a rewrite DVD disc, does it mean the disc becomes blank and the DVD recorder can then directly record a movie on it or the DVD recorder still needs to erase the disc again before recording?

By the way, is DVD Recorder erasing a DVD RW same as formatting the disc? Some DVD recorders just call the erasing as formatting (there is no erasing in the instructions but formatting only). If so, is the DVD recorder drive specific when formatting/erasing the disc? Does the RW disc need to be reformatted on the computer or the other different DVD recorder?
