My laptop shuts down halfway through a spybot s&d scan and things like converting video.

I havent ran a full spyware scan for quite a while now because of this problem so is there anyway to run it without it shutting down on me?

Will a scan in safe mode scan as normal?

A safe mode scan will be just like a standard scan. The issue is what is shutting down your laptop. If it is shutting down because it is overheating, then scanning in safe mode won't stop it happening.

Are there any particular video conversion products that appear to cause this problem ... name them .

Is ffdshow installed and divx6 .

Has video drivers been updated .

Does it shut down or does it hibernate?

If it is hibernating check your power management parameters and if necessary raise the timeout period on inactivity.

I dont know what ffdshow is so I probably dont have it.
It happens during total video converter & nero (the video conversion part) so nothing specific.

Does Windows do a full boot up or does it just present you with a user id or login screen? A shorter process than a reboot.

My Lenovo requires the power button to leave hibernation. Hibernation is not the same as sleep. Sleep any mouse or keyboard activity wakes from.

I strongly suspect overheating. OTOH, I always do that when a computer freezes (no pun!)/shuts down while encoding. If you can, open it up, check for dust and stuff in the heat sink/fan.

can i check for dust without opening it up?

maybe use some compressed air to the vents at the back?

Being laptop , have you also noticed if this happens either on battery or mains power , or both .
I had it happen once on battery , has not happened since connections were cleaned and serviced .

    ----

You have a lot of tasks running in log , only one is suspicious , it would be an idea to end some process's to relieve system resources and rerun test .

    Process which may be disguised

    GEARSec.exe

Gear CD/DVD Burning Software , if installed , fine .

    If not : http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/w32stubbotb.html

    ----

    Service laptop :

Remove drives if possible ... some are easy , clean connections
Internal clean is via removing keypad to access fans and motherboard connections .

    ----

ctfmon.exe may be the contributing factor to system reporting shutdown error .

Ms guide to disable : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q282599

    ---

    Questionable :

    C:\Program Files\Thomson\SpeedTouch USB\Dragdiag.exe

If connected by usb , this may cause problems ... best via network cable .

Or remove device for system , and try running scan without it connected .

  16. i am having the same problem, ive been converting videos all from mpg to wmv for my 30gb zune player im getting for x-mas

my laptop shuts off completely and is very hot, im suggesting this is a overheating problem and it seems like you have the same problem

i would suggest looking to buy a higher watt power supply

    hope that helps 8)

  17. No way is a higher watt power supply going to help with an overheating issue. In terms of wattage a electronic device will only draw as much power as it needs no matter what amount is available.

If your laptop shuts off and is very hot then most likely the fins on the CPU heatsink are blocked by dust. Overheating will make a laptop shutdown to protect the CPU.

Some laptops the heatsink and fan are easily accessible other not so easy.

Sad to say the design of laptops often makes it easy to pick up dust. The heatsinks are no oversized due to space and weight considerations as well as the fans are thermal controlled to save battery life.

Running a electronic device too hot will shorten its life.

We get laptops in for repair all the time that keep shutting off. In most cases, 95%+, the airflow through the heatsink is blocked by dust. the rest are thermal compund between the CPU and heatsink and Motherboard issues and misc faults.

Get a can of compressed air and blow it into all of the laptop's openings- above, below, and the sides. All it takes is some dust blocking the airflow for a laptop to overheat.
