    Hi there,

I reformatted my computer recently and reinstalled winAVI 8.0. Before I reformatted, my winAVI worked perfectly. All I use it for is to convert .rmvb files into .mpeg2 files. But after I reinstalled it on my reformatted computer, I can't get sound after the conversion, and the file is significantly larger. It is 6x as large. Does anyone know why it is like this? Thanks!

WinAVI has more than it's share of problems. Many, many problems with it are reported on our forums. Enough that I would never use it, JMO.

All I can suggest is to use the latest version. Just to add, RMVB is one of the more difficult formats to convert. It's propitiatory, so there's not a lot of options for different programs out there. It can commonly have variable audio and video, which is very hard to convert to a DVD or MPEG format without problems.

Better conversion programs...., not many. RMVB is more a problem than the programs. Perhaps others can suggest some alternative conversion programs..

Man, this has baffled me. I don't know what is different. Maybe I'm missing some codecs. What important codecs should I download? I have the K-Lite codec pack and AC3 Filter. I've also got DivX.

WinAVI and k-lite - you are just asking for things to go wrong.

Try Real Alternative to see if that helps, or try using SUPER instead to convert.

Oh man, really? I had K-Lite and WinAVI before too. Everything seemed to go right. This sucks. I e-mailed support at WinAVI. I'll post what they say. But, I'm still open to help from other members from the board !

If you have both WinAVI and the K-lite codec pack, I can see where you might have some problems. K-lite has a past history of destroying or damaging existing codecs beyond repair.

Most often, you can download the ffdshow codec program and solve most playback problems. Adding more codecs is a good way to create a major problem if they are incompatible, overwrite good codecs, and install old or corrupted codecs. All of which K-lite can do.

If you installed WinAVI, then K-lite, that may be your problem.

Fixing the damage isn't easy. K-lite doesn't uninstall without leaving 'remnants'. Maybe Codec Sniper might clean it up.

ffdshow includes most all needed codecs. It's fairly safe. If you need Quicktime and RM codecs, use Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative players.

EDIT: It will be interesting to see what WinAVI has to say. In the past they referred paying customers to us for their technical advice for their programs. Now that's customer service.

I've read their FAQ, and one of the answer to the question is to refer to here. They just e-mailed me back asking for the debug.log file of the program.

    -EDIT-

Hey guys, thanks for the help. Turns out, all I really did need was Real Alternative. Thanks sooo much!
