I used to use MPEG Streamclip for all my editing needs. But over the past few months it seems to not be able to load large (350mb to 700mb) .avi files anymore. That little wheel spins as if it's loading, but does that for 10 minutes and still doesn't load. It seems the only way I can get those .avi files to open in it is if I open it first in Quicktime, export it as a .mov then it loads fine in Streamclip. That's an awful lot of work to go through.
I emailed the developer and he hasn't gotten back to me.
The movies are typically encoded with the Xvid or Divx format.
I can't figure it out. The only thing I can think of is 1) I installed Perian for Quicktime and that some how interfered with it or 2) I installed both the 1.8 and 1.93b versions to test. But they both seem unlikely since I deleted the beta version and went back to the stable 1.8 version, deleted Perian and that still doesn't open these files.

Anyone else have any ideas as to what's causing this?

    Are you using Perian 1.0?
Do you have any other Xvid or Divx codecs on your system? could
    be a conflict....
You didn't mention audio codecs used...is it MP3?

Version 1.8 is running fine for me, with only Perian 1.0 and
    the Toast 8 DIVX codec.

I was using Perian, but once I started having this problem I deleted it but still have the same problem.
I have all the usual codecs I had installed before, Xvid, Divx and they never interferred before.
Audio codecs on the .avi's are MPEG Layer 3.
    Can't figure it out...

How much free space do you have left on your HD? Silly question, I know, but sometimes it's the simple stuff that trips us up. If you only have a couple of gigs left, your disk may be severely fragmented, leading to dog-slow performance. [OS X defrags automatically, but not if you've kept the machine busy.] Also, if you have a section of bad blocks where the disk is trying to write to, performance will slow to a crawl as the system attempts many retries. Try running a good disk utility, just to be sure. If you really haven't changed anything software-wise, but the behavior has, then your problem may be hardware related.

    Just a thought.

I'll assume you meant that WMP cannot open it.

First, does WMP open the original (unedited) file? If it can, then your problem can be caused by a couple of things. Without knowing the details of your edits, I can't be too specific, but here are some generally useful things to try:

    0) Rename the extension to .mpg (mpegstreamclip likes to rename them to .mpeg, which occasionally causes problems with some systems).
    1) Limit your cuts to keyframe boundaries (use command-K to locate the nearest one).
    2) Use MPEGStreamclip's "fix timecode breaks" feature.
    3) Demux, then remux your result. You can use the tools in ffmpegx. Or you can use bbdemux (to demux), and one of the multiplexers offered in "more missing mpeg tools."

Doing one or more of these operations will often fix minor noncompliance issues that WMP (and others) might be complaining about.

    Good luck!

WMP can open the original/source file Aveseq01.mpg
    Use Streamclip to delete commercials

WMP cannot open the edited/target file CommercialFree.mpg

Already did what tomlee suggested except item 3, demux/remux CommercialFree.mpg
I'm afraid it will reduce the quality of the video

    Thanks

  8. MPEG Streamclip makes some kind of MPEG wrapper which some apps cannot open...The best thing to do is to export demultiplexed - e.g. separate video and audio and then multiplex it with some other app in proper .mpg

In other words, do step 3.

Demux/remux does not reduce quality -- there is no conversion taking place. Demuxing simply separates the audio from the video, without touching either. Remuxing simply reassembles them into a single stream. Again, no conversion of the video or audio takes place, so there will be no quality loss.

  10. I am using MPEG Streamclip for the first time...is it normal for it to take 2 1/2 hours & still only at 45% to convert a 148MB MP4 file?
    thanks, Kim

@ Kim: I cannot tell your computer specs from your profile, so I can't begin to
guess why it is for you. But if your computer is low on Ram or your HD is full,
it is very possible for it to take a while.

    Hi guys,
I'm having trouble uploading movie clips that I have onto MPEG Streamclip. When I go "Open files" which are either AVI's or Mov's, MPEG streamclip doesn't even recognise the pictures. All I'm getting is a black screen. So converting them into a quicktime or anything is pointless, as the result is just a black screen. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong??
    Cheers, Phil.

    certainly nothing…
MPSC use Quicktime "engine" to read contents of files (and has its won functions to read wrappers that QT does not handle, eg: MPEG-TS wrapper)
if QuickTime can not display the content of your video, MPSC could not too

PS: Did you install the free codec "Perian" for QuickTime?

    bye

    Oh OK.
Yeah I don't actually view anything using quicktime, even tho they're in that format. I just use VLC Player.
I don't actually have QT player.
Yeah sorry, I'm still learning a lot.
So download "Quicktime Engine". This is a movie converter, yeah?
And also codec perian for quicktime? What's this?

Ps thanks for the help. Really appreciate it.

means "QuickTime Player" (Apple provided this app to you on every mac)

    So download "Quicktime Engine".
where did you read download in my sentence?
"MPegStreamClip" and "QuickTime player" are like two cars : both use the same engine, but they have 2 different bodyworks.

And also codec perian for quicktime? What's this?
you had an link with the word, just click on it first

I am having a strange problem with MPEG streamclip, was wondering if anyone knew the solution.

Operating in Vista 64 bit edition (Home edition), and using Quicktime Alternative 1.81

The current time indicator and progress bar do not display. See attached image.

Does anyone know how to fix this? Any insights greatly appreciated

  18. MPSC is mainly a mac app (a version is available for Windows, but it's not really the same app, not so good as the mac one )

    Hello Phil Prior ~

I am having the same problem with MPEG Streamclip on both PC and Mac. While most AVI files load and render outstandingly well, some AVI's will "load" on PC and Mac, but I just get a black or white screen, no image. Otherwise, MPEG Streamclip has been an outstanding program.
