The problem: I have a .avi file with mpeg-2 program stream and mpeg-1 layer 2 audio which will not play on my DVD player.

I would like to demux from the avi container to later mux it into a mpg container.

How can I demux the video and audio into elementary streams? What tool could I use? I know which tool to use and how to do it with regular avi files (mpeg-4 plus mp3 audio), but not this one.

    Thanks

What dose gspot report the true name of the file ... look close at the extension used

If it is indeed reported by name as avi , yet contains mpeg associated streams , then simply rename the file ... change the extension from "avi" to "mpg" .

If the above is correct , no need to demux , though dvd authoring may be required if your current player dose not support direct mpeg file play back .

In the file information area, at "path" field, GSpot lists the file as .avi. I suppose that is what you mean.

I will try your suggestion. Also, my player is capable of direct mpeg file playback. I have done so already.

    Thank you.

No. What Bjs meant was open the AVI file in Gspot and look at the [Container] window and see what it says for [File Type]...

    Oh, sorry. It says:

    MPEG-2 Program Stream {1 vid, 1 aud}
    Sys Bitrate: 10080 kb/s VBR

So that means it isn't an AVI file at all, it's just a misnamed MPEG file. Just change the extension from "*.AVI" to "*.MPG", and work with it from there (authoring for standard DVD-Video or not, as need be).

After renaming the file to *.mpg I can get video when playing on my DVD player, but no audio. I have not tried to author the file already.

    Any other idea?

    THanks

Audio in a muxed un-authored MPEG could be LPCM (aka like WAV--although shouldn't be), MP2, AC3, DTS, or even MP3 or AAC. Unless your player recognizes the codec type AND has decoding features on-board or as pass-through to decoding features on Receiver/Amp, you WOULN'T hear anything.

What does Gspot said about audio?
Does your DVDplayer/receiver support MP3? DTS?...
