Convert DVD to MPEG files....

I'm feeling just stupid right now. Let's start there and just admit it

I've created DVD-R's based on my old 8mm and VHS stuff, to eventually create fun DVD's for the family to see the old movies. I have ripped the DVD's to my hard drive using DVD FAB - I now have a VIDEO_TS directory on my hard drive with the DVD contents.

What do I do now? I want to convert these VOB files to something edit-able. I'm assuming MPEG2 is best because it's the native DVD format. So what is the best tool for that?

VOB2MPG, then edit with Womble Mpeg Wizard or VideoRedo

You can also load the files with TMPGEnc DVD Author 3 and edit them and create a DVD with menues within the program. Then compile and burn to disc. If you just wanted a big Mpeg, you could have ripped the disc with DVD Decryptor in IFO mode (set the IFO mode split file to "none" in the options). This will create 1 big VOB file that can be loaded into editors or Authoring software as well.

My thinking is that I want to end up with a zillion MPG files, each of a different old VHS video or camcorder video. (i.e., one for graduation, one for my 3rd birthday party, one for the camping trip, etc). Then, I can make all sorts of fun DVD's using these videos in any order and configuration I want.

Yes, load the files into TDA as separate files in the source Wizard (you can load clips, raw mpegs, VOBs, it doesn't matter) then edit them and make a menu with a template (or create one of your own). Just takes a bit of creativity....
