  1. Someone at my old job told me about this tweak and i did it and it worked but i have since formated my computer and cant find it on the web. It had to do with you being able to leave your computer on more than 2 days without restarting it. The person told me it would be better if you had a gig or ram or over but there was a setting he had me go and turn off does anyone know what the setting is???

PS: is there any more speed tweeks beside the (gpedit.msc) one that works good for xp????

You mean the os bug that requires system restart ... its not "2 days" .. its past 28 , or just past this ... dont recall the max .

Are you sure your not talking about "suspend to ram" ... before you wizz off through that ... read this first .

    http://blog.jillesvangurp.com/2006/03/19/suspend-to-ram/

Its has to be setup in the system bios prior to os install , or it dosent work as expected ... but that link dose provide another link to a tool that supposedly willl help users out of trouble .

A gig of memory is good advice .

I have a pc that I am using as a media server that only gets rebooted once or twice a month, and then usually only because of updates or whatever. XP doesn't have any issues with running several days/weeks.

Xp dose , linux dose not .

If using xp system as a drone , firewall , file server , no frequent user input , less likely to pop up .
If using it seriously for video editing , and alike , you will need to restart , sooner , rather than later .

And for another gatcha from ms ... restore points by default , after 90 days , clear off .
Another reason for creating disk images .

..Ah... well... that narrows it down a lot, it was a bloke. and it was a registry tweak. ("Elementary, my Dear watson") The bloke who told you about it, may even remember it? just a thought...

Change the registry from "shutdown=24hours" to "shutdown=never"
and also change "userlevel=sensible" to "userlevel=eibwen"

I have one with XP that runs 24/7. It reboots itself about twice a month and reloads the same programs to go right back to where it left off. Not a problem. I only know that it has rebooted when I see a program window open on the desktop. The reboots keep it running at a decent speed.

What kind of "little errors" start popping up all over the place? Be specific. What messages do you get, what behaviour does it exhibit? Possibly you have a corrupted or misconfigured install, virus, malware or spyware.

My HTPC runs on XP. When it is not in use I like to shut it down, just as I do with any other component in my home theatre. However, I do not wish to go through a full boot every time I turn it on, so I put it into hybernation - suspend to RAM with wake on USB. I have been doing this for over 2 years now. The machine gets a full restart about once every month. I also run an AntiVirus, spyware/malware checker, defrag the drive and run a checkdisc.

I have another workstation running XP and it goes 24/7. Been doing it for years. It also gets a defrag once a month and there is usually some reason to reboot the system every 30 days but I definately do not have "little errors" popping up all over the place, that would be a cause for concern.

Not certain if you can schedule XP to do a restart every so often but I have never found it to be a big issue pressing start/turn off computer/restart and waiting a few minutes once every month...

Most likely "the little errors" are related to whatever software he is using. Opening/closing some applications time and again can sometimes cause issues such as slowness. A reboot often clears the problem.

While running 24/7 doesn't often affect machines used as servers, I can see it being an issue on a machine used daily. However, the issue isn't really an XP issue, but a problem with the app(s) that you are using. They likely aren't releasing resources when they are closed.
