I don't know about Nero Recode, but these seem to be the specs for the 604:
Video playback**: MPEG-42 (ASP@L5 AVI, up to DVD resolution)
WMV (MP@ML, up to DVD resolution).
With optional software plug-ins:
- H.264 up to DVD resolution and AAC sound.
- MPEG-2 MP@ML up to 10 Mbps (up to DVD resolution) and AC3 stereo sound.
Audio playback**: Stereo MP3 decoding @ 30-320 Kbits/s CBR & VBR, WMA, Protected WMA, WAV (PCM/ADPCM).
With optional software plug-ins:
- AAC3 music files
- AC3 stereo sound files
Or you could use a few individual programs, mostly freeware to accomplish the same thing. AutoGk can get you Xvid or Divx encoded files from a decrypted DVD. Or FairUse Wizard.
WMV from Windows Media encoder.
H.264 from MeGUI. -
yes as long as your mpg files are with the specs for the archos you can just load them straight on to the player. If you want to compress them into smaller files like divx than you need to convert. Virtualdubmod or virtualdubmpeg2 is another good converison program. I believe the latest versions of both programs accepts wmv files.

So what choices (menus/selections) do I make in Nero to make the video files Archos compliant without plugins?
