  1. I am taking my DVD compliant mpeg2 files and converting them to the XVid avi format. I am using AutoGK and going with what AutoGK seems to prefer 640x480. My files are originally 29.97 fps and AutoGK seems to want to convert them to the Pal framerate. Is there a way around this? It doesn't seem right to be converting the frame rates as well. I know there are advanced settings you can choose from but the program seems to ignore the 29.97 even if you do select it. AutoGK is pretty good at detecting and analyzing a file, why does it fool with the frame rate?

  2. PAL frame rate (25 fps)? NTSC film frame rate seems more likely: 23.976 fps. Most DVDs are 23.976 fps with pulldown flags that tell the DVD player how to convert it to 29.97 fps for display on TV. If you're going to AVI you don't need or want to perfrom the pulldown, hence the 23.976 fps.

  3. jagabo: Thank you for responding to this topic. You are right it does show that the frame rate is 23.976fps. I put a couple of 23 minutes episodes each at 275mb in size on a CD and they had good quality video and sound when I played them on my Phillips 5140. So I guess don't get all worried about 640x480 instead of 720x480, it looks and sounds good and just let AutoGK do its job. Thanks one again for the information you have provided in regard this matter.

640 x 480 is the same as 720 x 480, except with a 1:1 pixel aspect ratio. DVD uses a non-square pixel aspect ratio, which your TV adjusts for when you watch it. For AVI files, which are mostly designed for viewing on a PC, 1:1 PAR is the norm. Your Divx capable player knows how to adjust these for TV playback.
