alright this program is the only thing that will help me reach my goals. check it out: i got 24 anime epesiodes that are in mkv format, i successfully changed the first on over to avi using the decoder the program has. however when i try to do the other 23 it takes forever, after viewing the processing information the status is frequently saying there was a error decoding the frame and it skips it. what can i do for it to properly decode it like it the did the first epesiode? note im using also mokgvm which i used to extract the subs and enter them on ffmpegx, because trying to convert it the mplayer won't allow the subs to be shown whens its avi. if you know how to solve that problem then that would be better but overall help!

AFAIK ffmpegx has a couple of issues with the mkv container, but using the "decode with quicktime" (with perian installed) option for the files usually works in alleviating the issue. as for your subtitle issues, you can follow the helpful guide in this thread:

to get stylized subs to work rather easily without needing to use applications such as mokgvm.

thanks, before i do this however one question. how long does it take then afterwards? believe me i was using visual hub and just roxio toast to convert these files with the perian codec and it took me over two hours to do just one file and i lost video quality. should i expect the same?

You should expect the same time as it took with visualhub. On my old machine it takes something like 5-10 times longer than using standard mencoder or ffmpeg settings. And you always lose video quality when reencoding. You can minimize quality loss by setting some encoding options (and I think Xvid is better than the Divx preset, but slower).

It all comes down to what processing power you have and what encoding times are acceptable for you. With my old G4 800 currently I stick with ffmpeg or mencoder divx (40-60 minutes per episode). But 2 hours per episode would be acceptable for me if I get better quality. Just put all the episodes into ffmepgx and let your computer run for 2 days.

even on my new, powerful C2D iMac encoding something like Gurren Lagaan at 1024x576 with perian takes a loooooong time, even if its the only surface process running. it takes a good while compared to what i'm used to without the benefits of perian, but it sure beats getting those ugly little transparent subtitles.
