  1. Hello again kids.

I am officially dissillusioned by SVCD (I guess it's oK for music vids) and so have opted to scrounge and sacrifice for a Panasonic AO3 DVD Burner. So, now I'm capturing some AVI's and I want to encode them to DVD NTSC format with TMPGEnc. I'm looking for opinions since I couldn't find any doing a search.

    Constant Quality or 2-Pass VBR?
What is the highest bitrate I can use?
What bitrates are best to use for CQ or VBR (max, min, avg)?
I want to keep everything at the best quality possible. Thanks a lot for all your help. Have a nice day.

Well first the maximum bitrate that you can use for a DVD according to the DVD Standards is 9000KB. I have run across some DVD's that go slightly higher then this but not by much.

Second you must use a GOP Sequence header of 1 per interval. You also must select a maximum of 18 frames in the GOP.

To your question of VBR or CQ. I have been using CQ on rippen DVD's with better results then VBR. Tmpgenc as you now will produce a log with the encoding. I noticed that the bitrate was lower then I wanted on the average even tho I had set it to say 5000kb. The average was always around 3000kb so I went to CQ and the log came back with 5000.1kb and a much nicer picture in less time.

You'll have to experiment with your .avi's tho.
