Putting each DVD in a unique track and the thing doesn't play on my DVD player. It displays the menu but track 4 won't play.
Likewise, using one track and multiple chapters and it wouldn't display at all.
What's the most compatible method?

I'm not clear on what you are doing.
Do you mean each 'title' as a separate track? Or are you combining several DVDs into one, like in a episodical DVD?
Anyway, you might look to this guide:
http://www.digital-digest.com/articles/TMPGEnc_DVD_Author_3_DVD_Authoring_Guide_page1.html It's for TDA 3, but there are links to other guides and versions there.
Or for other TDA guides, look here and select TMPGEnc DVD Author as the 'Tool' in the search box: https://www.videohelp.com/author
And you might tell us what version of TDA you are using. There are several, mostly different. -
I'm using version 3, and yes I mean each title as a seperate track. (To rewudz)

You might want to describe your whole process so we can get a better idea of what or where it may go wrong. TDA3 supports 99 Tracks with 99 chapters per track, pretty much the DVD standard.
Is your menu complex with motion/audio? Media type, what kind of DVD player do you have? Does it play ok on your PC? -
Menu isn't complex, just a picture from the movie. Menu displays but when clicked, film itself doesn't start just returns to menu. Add track on left then drag IFO. Add 5 dvds, destination dual layer. Menu stage - Can't remember, custom menu, with "Display Top Menu Only" selected.
Dunno if media works on PC. Brand is AOne Dual Layer Printable.
Thanks. -
Looks like you've used 'standard' menu style (rather than 'classic' style) at menu creation, haven't you? The difference is that in place of 'play' button it has 'back' (to top menu) button and it is selected by default. To play the track you have to first use arrow button on remote for selecting your thumbnail picture button.

Check video length for that track 4 in track properties (source window) to be sure it was properly imported and not cut to a couple of frames (this could explain fast going to top menu instead of playback). If it's OK, then it's possibly some button command bug (never had it though), it can be corrected in external software like DVDRemake or PGCEdit.

I think Alex may be onto something, when you dragged the IFO file into the clip list, which IFO file did you drag exactly? Did the Source Wizard pop up asking you to select a track from that IFO file? It might be a small IFO file that contains junk? Mainly, i'm interested in how you can cram 5 (full?) DVDs onto 8.5 GB DVD-9 without a major hit in bitrate quality.
Try using the source wizard on all your imports and see if that helps.
