  1. The changelog for .43 said the same thing.. but then they also never officially recognisd the playback issues with packed files either.

Maybe just order a 5982 online? since players can be adapted for pal/ntsc anyway, there' not much reason not to get the 5982?

Yes, it's correct that it is the PAL firmware that ends with .33

Because the 5980 and 5982 principally is the same products, have anyone tried crossflashing them?

Seems some people get this to work with specific firmwares, or am i wrong?

I don't doubt you, but what is the source of this information?

I have a 5982 and bought a 5982 for my mother, who lives in another town. I download documentaries for her, burn them to disc and mail her the discs. Only I'm tired of burning dvds. I'm thinking of just buying some 16gb usb flash drives and using them to mail back and forth instead. That's where the question about data rates comes into play. If you're correct -- and I assume you are -- then I need to stick with dvds as the medium for sending her material, since a film in HD will easily surpass 3000 kbps.

FWIW, the USB 2.0 spec includes a "high-speed mode" (480 Mbit/sec or 60 MB/sec), but not all 2.0 compliant devices support that mode. The next slower mode is "full-speed" (12 Mbit/sec or 1.5 MB/sec) See this Wikipedia articlei. You write that the 5982 can handle 8000 kbps from dvd, which is roughly 8 MB/sec; or 3000 kpps from usb, which is roughly 3 MB/sec. I wonder if the usb port on the 5982 is merely usb 2.0 compatible, but not not "high-speed" rated.

  4. The USB port on the 5982 is USB 1.1. The USB port on the 5990 and 5592 are USB 2.0.

    @ jagabo

I'm tired of burning dvd (data discs) for my mom. I was thinking of just buying a few 16gb usb flash drives and send ing her a thumb drive instead. It's faster and easier to copy a file to a thumb drive than burn to a dvd -- and 16gb usb drives are more space-efficient than 4.7gb dvds. However, based on your comments, it looks like I'd need to replace her 5982 with a 5990 or a 5992 for this to be feasible.

BTW... since you're the Sensei of Philips dvd players... what's the usb port on a Philips PET1030? I've been using my PET1030 with a Maxtor 2.5" usb drive with no problems whatsover, but I've never tried to play anything over SD resolution, either (nor would I).

  6. I don't know anything about the PET1030. It's easy enough for you to test what bitrates it will support. Just make a series of short videos at 1000, 2000, 3000,... 8000 kbps then see when it craps out.

By the way, neither the DVP 5892 nor the DVP 5990 will play anything over 720 pixels wide. They are not HD players. They simply upscale SD to HD for output.
