We are building a new box,
    we are building it bigger...

Gonna be surfing & editing HDV with XP Pro and MSP7.3
Is there a decent mobo/cpu combo out there that has good onboard graphics for around $200?
    No raid wanted.

    Thx

  2. Hello zoobie

If u are looking for a mobo AND cpu for $200 i say you're out of luck. At least if u plan on editing HDV.
However if it is the motherboard u want for $200 it might be easier to find something, but depending on what socket (type of cpu) you choose the overall price will differ alot. Xeon processors are after all a lot more expensive than Athlons.

I am buying next month a Tyan motherboard for Dual Xeon for about $300, and two Xeon E5345 for about $600 each.
The thing about these motherboards is that they support 8 or even more DIMMs for memory, I will have 8x2gb. The more the merrier when it comes to editing video.
However this may differ depending on what "kind" of editing you are doing, if all you need to do is to rearrange scenes and cut/trim you can get buy with any normal Core 2 Duo motherboard and cpu these days i suppose.

Seeing as you are going to use MSP i would think a decent Core 2 Duo motherboard with support for the latest Intel CPUs is a safe bet and wont put a hole in your wallet. A good set of memories with that and i should think u have decent performance for the money.

All prices in this message were converted from Swedish Krona excluding VAT. So i can't really find u any links unless u import from sweden heh.

    Hope this helps some

    Thx
    I wondered why nobody responded...Now I know.
I'll see if I can't pick up a Core 2 Duo this Christmas. I'd prefer an AMD but whatever.
But if not, I don't see why I can't wait 11 years to edit like I did with my Hi8.
By then, the Xeons will be 5 bucks...

My Biostar P4M890 supports HD, much to my surprise Mine came bundled with a Pentium dual-core and was within the price limit you mention. Read the online reviews before committing yourself to a purchase.

Any working Core2Duo or even lower system will handle HDV editing. I just comes down to speed vs. investment.

My HDTV computer uses a Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H Micro-ATX motherboard with on-board graphics, 2 GB Corsair XMS DDR2-800 RAM and a AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ CPU (2.6GHz) dual core CPU. It has component and HDMI output and runs very cool. Running Vista Home Premium at present.

    MB _$80
    RAM $120
    CPU $125 w/cooler
    _____________
Total $325US (Todays NewEgg prices.) Sorry, can't get too near to $200US

It does fairly well for a economy setup: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic336716.html#1752361 The RAM was discounted down to $60US a few days ago, which would put it a bit below $300 total.

At the other extreme I picked up a Core2Duo E4300 (retail box) and Ecs Mobo for $99 at a Fry's grand opening special, then added 2x DDR6400RAM at ~$44/GB and an Antec Solo Case + PS for $80 with $80 rebate. The rest of the stuff I had. I got it for internet and Vista testing/playing. It does HDV reasonably well. Not a bad $187 + Vista upgrade to a former P4 2.4GHz machine.

    now yous talkin my language

maybe I can find a goof that has to have a quad core and pickup a bargain combo

I don't want to have to turn to a life of crime to make HDV

however, I just read with HD and computers, the more cores the merrier...

True but Cores over 2 are more expensive for now. I opted for a faster Core2 on an XP machine for editing and this second Core2 utility machine that can also encode. I got my Quad cores that way.

This expert I've been talking with swears up and down about Intel's C2D E6750 with amazing performance. It's also $200!

Not only that, his recommended $130 Intel boards may have onboard video but don't seem to have DVI.

I'm beginning to think along the lines of redwudz'z Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H

This highly rated board also has onboard ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 & DVI for my FP monitor.
    Plus I just saw an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ for $115

    But are the capacitors quality?

They have other MBs with solid capacitors, but more $$. And they may not have the same features. That MB also has HDMI out, though I don't use it with my setup.

I haven't had any capacitor problems in the last few years. I think most all the MB companies got away from that particular brand of bad caps as soon as they could. I particularly needed a Micro ATX MB with the HTPC case I am using.

    That's a great efficient setup
But lately, I find I'm screwing around more with the computer than creating

Here's Gigabyte's version of the above board with the Intel CPU for about $40 more:
