I am currently happy with my video capture work with VirtualDub (converting to mpg with Tsunami MPEG Encoder) using ATI AIW-128 Rage card under Windows ME and Pentium III 700 MHz processor with the appropriate driver from ATI for ME and burning with WinOnCD.

I need to migrate to Pentium IV and Windows XP. Can I keep the ATI AIW-128 Card, under XP and Pentium IV? It seems, NOT because, it appears, Pentium IV motherboards do not provide AGP1 slots which is what AIW-128 needs. So, I have to migrate to Radeon 8500.

Could those who have used Radeon under XP advise as to what is the best way to continue my video capture work in the proposed new environment? Will VirtualDub work? I am told, it does not with the WDM drivers. In that case, what alternative software can I use for capture and conversion to mpg? Can the mpeg-1 files captured with PowerVCRor any other software suggested by experienced readers, be burnt into VCD 2.0 format under XP? If so, what version of PowerVCR and WinOnCD or Nero would I need to be able to burn the VCDs? Will they also play on stand-alone Samsung VCD player?

Even thopugh the question has a "Burning" component, I am not posting it on the other forum to avoid duplication but I hope the readers there too will notice it.

Looking forward to learning from the experience of veterans.

  2. I currently upgraded to P4 and XP.Here some eXPeriences;
If your new motherboard is based on Intel 845/850 chipsets, you should upgrade your AIW as well,
because these chipsets don't support AGP 2x (3.3V) cards. AIW 128 is 2x and AIW 128 Pro is compatible with 2x/4x mode AGP slot but it supports 2x(3.3V) only.If you install these cards it will damage your MB.
So you can't keep your card, upgrade options are a PCI or AIW Radeon AGP, or AIW 8500DV (so eXPensive) if you want an all in one card with TV tuner (just like your old AIW 128).
Now about XP-erience! after upgrading, ATI Radeon AIW XP drivers and MMC 7.5 work best on XP platform
you can continue your vdub captures(XP has a built-in wrapper!).
But I got a question and I hope you answer it:
I was always unable at getting PowerVCR to work properly. I quess it's not compatible with ATI cards or the drivers. Your comments on this is greatly appreciated.
For real time vcd mpeg-1 capture use MMC Reg Tool.
WinOnCD 5 (works fine in XP) is one of the best simple VCD authoring tool available (EasyCD is a ... !).
for advance authoring look at VCD Imager/Easy, TSCV, VideoPack, etc.
Nero is buggy at (s)VCD burning!

    Thanks for sharing your experience.
First, answer to your question: The PowerVCR II software works fine on my PC under ME. It also does real-time capture in mpeg-1 format. BUT if I try to burn a VCD using those mpeg-1 files under WinOnCD, I get an error message rejecting all those files saying the files are not mpeg packages required for burning a VCD. Nero accepts them but the Nero CDs cannot be played on stand-alone Samsung VCD Player. The VideoDub capture files encoded with Tsunami MPEG Encoder are accepted by WinOnCD and the VCD can be played on ATI VCD or PowerVCR DVD and Samsung VCDPlayer.

Unfortunately, the ATI AIW-128 Rage (with the corresponding XP driver from ATI) gives a stuttering sound during the TV play on both ATI TV and PowerVCR TV. VirtualDub cannot work under XP with AIW-128 because the device is not recognized. So capture cannot be tested with the ATI AIW-128 Rage at all under XP. So when you say I can do video capture with VirtualDub under XP with Radeon (XP has a built-in wrapper), what does it mean? Is the device recognized by VideoDub and does the video screen show up in the VirtualDub panel?

Sorry to bug you but I ahve to make sure that I can do video capture with VirtualDub under XP.

    Thanks.
