Why does this binary have the Excel graphic attached to it? The fiel name is mpeg2enc.intel - should I rename this file and use a different file extension suffix?
Thanks!

Mac OS X tries to match files to applications in a number of ways, and sometimes it makes a wrong assumption. The icon and suffix (even the filename!) are not important, the installer should take the binary file just fine, as long as the content of the file is right.
You could try a different copy with the right icon, if that would make you feel better, tho'.
