Like the title says I'm on ie6 and the Google spell checker which always worked on this site has stopped working. Other sites are ok only Videohelp and I've rebooted, opened multiple windows and it's been the same for a day or two.
When I click on the checker I see activity like it's scanning the read only default box and the font size box but not the posting box. I see those 2 boxes jump every time I click on "Check"
btw) I put something in the search box and it didn't scan it either almost looks like it tried to access the search button instead.

You probably are used to your spell checker, but I have used the freeware IESpell for a couple of years and I really like it. It gives you a icon for the program in the IE toolbar and it's freeware, fast and easy to use. http://www.iespell.com/ Saves me from most embarrassments from misspelled common words.
It found three typos in the above post from my lazy typing and I corrected them. -
I haven't changed the posting page since august 27. Does it work in the quick reply text area?
-
When I wrote in the quick reply box and made no errors it said "no errors found". When I made an error on purpose it paused and then nothing like no response.
In another thread here I tried a normal edit again and the spell check worked once so I thought it was fixed, I tried it again and I got "please wait" like it was trying to contact someone or something but couldn't. I tried again and it did nothing.
Could something be intercepting traffic on the site. I have again gone to Lumenlab.com and posted there and it checks multiple times with no hesitation. I went to google search boxes off this site and it works fine there.
Edit:
I left the thread and came back pressed edit and then used the spell checker. It worked. I tried it again it didn't. I exit back and tried edit again and the spell checker didn't work. I tried again and it sometimes worked the first time but never twice in a row. I wrote this text and it won't check at all even if I exit and re-paste the text.
On other sites when I press the google spellcheck button "Check" it renames to "stop". On this site I see a quick pale hourglass flickering dimly next to the mouse pointer like there's activity going on but the button stays at "check". It's like it needs to get to google's dictionnary but it can't. When I fill more text than the topic box can hold and then put the slider down and hit check I can see the slider bounce up.
This is before I hit the "check" button
This is after I hit the check button
This activity means something is happening but what?
My security settings are actually less strict on this site than anywhere else and I don't even block popups on Videohelp so I can't see what it could be. -
I deliberately typed spane in the front page search like this
I get this message
I tried other words and it's the same message
I tried that on another sites search box and it just checks ithe spelling but no message like that -
I don't know why Google spell check is not working here but everywhere else. I cleared everything in temp cache and cookies. Reinstalled the toolbar and it still doesn't work on this site. Since no one else has commented I have to think that it's something at my end although it's strange that it's only tis site.
Thanks redwudz
I installed ieSpell. It's different but it works well so I'll use it on Videohelp. I like the fact that it can use the Canadian spelling like "colour" and also add new acceptable spelling of words to a custom list.
OK hold on a minute
This is ridiculous I spoke too fast:
Look at the picture. I saw that I misspelled "this", I wrote tis and it didn't catch it so I reran iespell and this is what it did. It's checking the line above the box where the font size is!!!!! Something is wrong!
Without pressing any button I passed the mouse over the font button which changed the text. It looks like the spell checker reads the text box when the values have changed. If I leave it the same and then run it again it doesn't read it a second time it goes back to the normal post box but if for example, I mouseover the url button and the text changes then the next time I run iespell it checks the new text.
Sorry to be a pain about this but it's very funny that I'm the only one that seems to have a problem with 2 spell checkers and it's only on Videohelp. I can manually add text to the label / text box and the spell checker will check it. Shouldn't that box be read only to us maybe that's what fooling the Google checker too. -
IE Spell does seem to pick up the line just above the type in text box, but it has always done that. Like 'Insert URL: http://url or URL text (alt+w) It shows the 'url' part as a misspell or if you change the font color, it shows the #FF00....' But I put them in the dictionary each time a new one shows, so it doesn't notice them next time.
I assume it can't tell that line from the text box. Might be something with the HTML coding of the page. Or something in IE itself. I seriously don't like Firefox's spell checker, so I have stayed with IE and IE Spell. I do like to be able to put in common video and computer terms in its dictionary so that it doesn't show them as errors each check.
BTW, 'tis' tis an English word, not a misspell, just not used much anymoreA contraction of 'it is' according to a dictionary.

Wow, fast work Baldrick.
Yes, that seems to fix IE Spell seeing it. I was so used to it picking up that line, I just ignored it most of the time. Thanks.
-
sudy (deliberate misspelled word hope it's not a foul word in some language)
Thanks for trying but nope! iespell still checked the line above and Google checker still doesn't work.
The mystery goes on. According to iespell it checks "input" boxes. -
crappy spell checkers....
Maybe it will work better with phpbb3.
-
Hmm... Works for me with IE Spell. It doesn't pick up anything in that line any more. It does pick up "sudy" , even in quotes.

@redwoods
Did you mouse over something first so the text changes?
This time I didn't even bother to do that and it still checked the line. Maybe you are displaying default words like "Code checker" so it passes to the next field or maybe you are using American English so the word "color" is ok so it continues to the post text. Try changing the dictionary to Canadian or mouse over the URL so you get the word "URL" in the text line and see if it catches that.
@Baldrick
This used to work fine. I can't exactly pinpoint when it stopped working but it was within the few days before I started this thread. What is unusual is that in a few tests since then, the first time I tried the Google checker it worked. It was only when I pressed a second time that it didn't work. So it could have been like that longer than what I think. On Sept 13 I said it worked sometimes but since then I've tried the Google checker in a number of threads and it hasn't worked once.
Any chance it's connected to the added box I requested for the "strike" font. Could there be some duplicate field number or could it be field order related?
@ Anyone else
Could you please confirm if you use the Google toolbar spell checker and whether it works for you even if you repeat the check multiple times in the same post. Thanks. -
I'm trying to see if it's something at my end.
I don't write html etc... so
Is this normal as a header on a forum site. I don't recall that link to "w3" with simple normal code pages.
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<script language='javascript' src='http://edited by gll99/js.cgi?pa&r=16290'></script>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<meta http-equiv="Content-Style-Type" content="text/css">
<link rel="top" href="https://forum.videohelp.com/" title="" />
<link rel="index" href="https://forum.videohelp.com/" title="" /> -
Well, it shouldn't be any xhtml so I changed it to html 4.01. But I don't think it will help.
-
I tried a 'mouse over' on most all of the options on that line and IE Spell ignores them all now. Maybe reset IE and IE Spell? Or it's a flaw with Canadian English with IE Spell?
OK, I found something. When I switched IE Spell to Canadian English, it now detected that line.No clue why that's happening.
But you still should be be able to add those 'found' words to the dictionary and have them skipped the next time.
It's probably a minor flaw in the program. But it's a freeware program and it does work well for me. -
Now it looks like this
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
<html>
<head>
I also have ZA and I thought maybe some privacy setting was the problem so I disabled it but it didn't help.
When I mouse over the url box and the text changes, iespell still checks the line and Google still does nothing. Like I said before, I used to see the font colour and font size boxes jump with Google sometimes but it doesn't even do that either. Even if I highlight the post text Google doesn't try. It's like something is blocking it. Rather than chase we should see if someone else who uses the Google toolbar has any problems. If it's only me then it's my problem to solve. iespell works pretty well despite that one little issue.
@redwudz
it's not a problem that it checks that field I just wanted to establish that it does check it. It's normal for the Canadian spelling to question"color" we spell it "colour"
Another thing just happened. I set and unset the browser popup blocker and got 1 google check but only one. when I tried again it did nothing. [s:89f22f0412]The popup blocker settings under "tools" are grayed out which I find weird.[/s:89f22f0412] it's adjustable when I turn it off so it's ok. I even had videohelp on the do not block list and took it off to see but it's the same.
Thanks
