I have the strangest problem with ffdshow. I downloaded an mkv file that says Simplified and Tranditional Chinese subs. I can "sometimes" get it to work. I would open it and it would appear, then I would open it again around 5 minutes and I would get hfa;iehfa;nc and squares for Chinese characters. I've tried a few things and seem like I can't get the Chinese subtitles to show up correctly.
I opened up the file in Vdubmod. The subtitles are in ssa. I've dealt with ssa's before but only with english subs. Is there a setting/plug-in I can use to get that sub constantly working?
FYI, I did try vobsub and it doesn't like this "particular" file cause it would freeze. Everything plays fine besides the subs. I'll continue to test, but of course I love a faster answer if possible.

I can't read Chinese, but I can read Russian, which is written in the Cyrillic alphabet. My experience is that to get subtitles tools to work correctly with Cyrillic and not show the garbage you described, I had to go to the Control Panel, then Regional and Language Options, then Advanced and for "Select a language to match the language version of the non-Unicode programs you want to use", I had to choose Russian. I suspect that you will have to do something similar and possible select some appropriate code page for Chinese characters. You may also have to install some software from an XP install disc to make this work as if you bought your PC from a store, it is extremely unlikely that they pre-installed the Chinese character sets you will need.

Yea I kind of suspected it was a language pack, but I doubt it. I think I got the gist of the problem. I'm running Vista Home and it mostly already has the East Asian fonts on there.
The file is just bad. I tried it with another one and it work. Sucks how FFDshow won't show you subtitles if the subtitle file had weird characters =/. Anyone experience this?
