I am capturing my VHS videos to DVD and am using the Phillips DVDR880 machine to do it.

The capture works fine and the disc plays well. However, I want to make an identical copy of each DVD but my DVD software will not make a copy, - there's some kind of read error (on each disc I try). However, it plays fine etc.

When finalising the disc on the Phillips 880 there is an option to leave the disc "unprotected" and this is what I choose, but I have problems copying it.

    Any ideas?

I believe if you see "protected or unprotected" you are using an RW disc?
If you are indeed using an RW disc...just finalize the disc. Finalizing the disc actually makes it a "DVD"....without it the disc is just a bunch of unconnected data blobs.
An RW disc can easily be erased and made useable again on the computer.

If it is a regular +R disc...again you will need to finalize it in order to work with it "normally" in a computer.

Thanks - its a DVD+R. I do finalize it and it works great in all computers. Its just when it comes to copying it that it fails.
Even manually copying the VOBs to the hard drive fails.

Can you be more specific on what you have tried so far - Windows Explorer, DVD Decrypter etc, and how it fails - error messages etc. ?

You really aren't giving us a lot to go on.

Thanks - I have used Windows explorer, it starts to create the VOB files on my hard drive then an error comes up "cannot copy from disc", or "failed" - something like that.

I used Recordnow on my Toshiba laptop, and Nero Express on my desktop. Both fail saying they cannot copy from disc.

However, they play alright on DVD players, laptops and desktops so theres no disc physical error. Its just copying that fails.

Is there a tool out there that rips discs like this?

The DVDs are good ones: Tayio Yuden +Rs.

    Hope this helps...

DVDDecrypter in ISO Read/ISO Write mode should do the trick for an exact copy.

Yes, you're right , DVD Decrypter did seem to work.
Except for the final file; it got 99% done and gave me an error,

    I/O error, file VS_1_0.BUP
Invalid IFO/BUP file, on-the-fly file patching failed.
    67,584 bytes.

I chose retry with no joy, but then just ignored as it seemed to have copied all the VOBs. So I pretty sure I have all the VOBS just this one file I am lacking.

    Is this BUP file important?

The BUP file is important, but as it is (at least should be) just a backup of the corresponding IFO, you can simply make a copy of XXXXXX.IFO and rename it to XXXXXX.BUP

Those 880's were a pain in the freakin' butt.
BUP's usually are not important when just ripping material
from the disc....however they might be necessary when making an exact
    copy.
You may also want to try to rip it with DVDFabDecrypter too. It seems to be a bit more forgiving than DVDDecrypter when it comes to "apparent" errors.

How many titles are on this disc?

I've also got the latest and greatest(OK...LAST) Philips firmware upgrade for that era of machine(same era as my still functioning DVDR985) but that doesn't do you much good right now.

Just tried latest ver of DVDFabDecrypter but same error.

    I'll try copying xxxxxx.IFO to xxxxxxx.BUP
    and see what happens.

It bugs me a bit that it got to 99% done and failed.

Well, DVD-R and DVD-RW are often hard to backup - There's often some read error most backup tools choke on (something later protection schemes seems like they're trying to mimic). DVDFab Decrypter is the most error tolerant backup tool I've come across, but a read error is a read error and can't be repaired, just handeled more or less gracefully.

Philips 880's are +R only machines.

  16. I had a Philips 985 and had the same problem copying discs in the PC.

Ulead DVD Movie Factory 2 usually copies the disc ok where DVDecrypter fails at the 99% mark. Select the option to create an iso.

I used to use UDMF2 SE to edit my RW discs "on the disc"....very cool feature but also painfully slow..
As long as I had only one title to start with....the discs were a piece of cake to work with on a computer....multiple titles is where the trouble starts. Not impossible but....more complicated.

  18. hech54,

I am still using MF2SE. I usually use rip the vobs with Dvdecrypter,, then use VieoRedo to do any cutting needed, then load into DVD MF.

You wrote "used to use UDMF2 SE". Have you found something better?

  19. Philips recorder discs are not "copy-protected." What you are encountering are problems reading (and thus copying) the discs. The simplest solution might be to try some new +RWs (as reused ones can develop reading errors, as I have discovered in using my Philips recorder). You can also try data recovery programs like Isobuster, since you are not limited to traditional ripping programs for your problem. All you need to copy is the Video-TS folder as data, which you can then burn as a DVD (using for example Nero or Image Burn.) You do not need an a disc image (which is sometimes harder to get from DVD recorder discs in my experience.)

Well....I still use MF2 SE for most of my slide shows that I make for family back home...but I don't use it for DVDing anymore. If I need to create a DVD with new menus and such from a DVDR from my Philips DVDR985...I just plan ahead and make sure I create a DVD with ONE title.....rip it with DVDDecrypter(making sure I demux audio from video)....then load both into TDA (TDA likes demuxed material better IMO....especially with discs from my Philips).

Even with a DVDR with more than one title....I demux faithfully IF I'm going to create a DVD with a menu.
Basically I just make sure to tear the original disc apart before I create a new one. FILE SPLITTING - NONE is a godsend on DVDDecrypter....

For cutting/editing.....I normally use MPEGVCR or even Virtualdub.
