My fiend has a window vista laptop with a DVD burner.

It works everytime when he burn to a DVD-R, but recently
his burner can not Finalize the DVD-R, and it can not play in a divx dvd player that
    connect to a tv.

He had install another dvd burn program, but it still has the same problems.
He also buy a new brand dvd-r to try. But it still did not finalize.

Did he need to buy a new burner or other things going on?

    Thanks

A little more info would be nice.
Does the burning SW indicate an error when finalizing?
    What SW is being used?
    What brand DVDs?
    What other applications are running?

    Welcome wswingsze

Dvd's that will not finalize usually result from :

A: The program used to burn has issue .
    B: Media fault .
    C: Dvd burner fault .
    D: Os issue .

    But you did not mention what "A" , "B" , and "C" are ?

Your friend may want to updated the firmware for the burner .
    And use imgburn instead .

Before anything else needs looking into .

I think he used to use Power2Go to burn the DVD
He had use TDK & Imation, the Imation use to work
I think he mostly did not open other applications while he burning DVD

He also had tried to uninstall Power2Go and install Nero.

He mention after the data/movie burn to the DVD, it jump to said it finish.
It used to said something, "it done finalize"

How can he check is it the burner broken?

There isn't a way verify if it is broken without replacing it.

As for burning with Nero, it creates an error log whenever there is a burning issue. You can use the error log to pinpoint what may have caused the problem.

TDK & Imation ... bin them , you'd have to pay me a small fortune to even look at them ... magmedia (evil) , compro , bin as well ... good for scaring birds from fruit tree's or blinding door to door sales people .

Also acceptable as a replacement for missing rear vision mirror on car ... lol

Verbatim , sony ... theres another top brand known as ty ... cant recall it , are considered best .

Others tested , datastream pro , lg seem fine , but then it comes down to the burner and what it finds ok , being completed successfully .

I seen hp branded , and will be giving those a test soon .

    ====

Burners just don't break ... they die a slow death , but considering its vista and a laptop , I would recommend an external usb2 enclosure with an lg burner ... just burn with imgburn at 4x .

I burnt a full dvd to mine on the dell d620 , and its only usb1 , winnt 2000 pro , and everybody said it wouldn't work ... it dose , but at 1x ... media write speeds are higher , but imgburn gives user the option to set it and ignore the media minimum write speed ... only the future will tell if the disc packs it in ... I'll keep my eye on it .

    ====

The moral to the story :

When it comes to laptops , leave its drive for more important things like reloading the os ... there not as easy to replace when they do eventually snuff it .

But I still recommend trying at least one of the more reliable brands .

What are you trying to make....a video DVD or a data disc with DivX files on it?

THAT is what was meant by more info needed.

On a PC you don't finalise, you close the session. For both DVD Video and divx data discs you need to write them in a single, closed session, which is the default for most burning applications. Imgburn works fine under Vista.
