  1. At the request of many of my users, I would like to make a GUI for mov2avi.exe Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with it personally.

    When I run mov2avi -?c I only get 2 options listed:

    1 none
    2 component video

I know I have more codecs installed. Any idea why I can't get a list of codecs to appear? I'm running Win2000 Pro and I do have quicktime installed.

  2. I don't see why you need anything, QuickTime Pro can export MOV to AVI by itself, and does a pretty good job too.

  3. I was able to find help elsewhere - the problem was that I only installed the quicktime essentials. mov2avi requires the quicktime authoring package to be installed as well.

Sefy, thanks for the suggestion I suppose, but it isn't for me to decide what my users want - there is a strong demand for a GUI for mov2avi, so that's what I'll make.

  4. I agree with Sefy about why you'd want to make a GUI for mov2avi. Sure, quicktime pro may cost you money (if you don't want to use illegal serialz or crackz), but it does export to avi (though, with a limited number of compression codecs and huffyuv/divx aren't among the ones allowed, at least, in quicktime pro 4). Also, I believe I read off of Nicky's Pages (over at digital-digest.com) that you don't need to spend any money at all to convert quicktime .mov to .avi. Just have the free quicktime player installed (doesn't have to be the pro version). Next, head over to www.radgametools.com and download their bink! software (it's a player and encoder all in one). Install bink! and start it up. From there, you highlight the quicktime .mov file you wish to convert, then click on the "Convert a file" button. It should prompt you with a dialogue box asking you what streams to convert (video+audio, video only, audio only) and where to store the converted .avi file. Once you're all set, just click on the "Convert" button and you'll be asked next to select your video compressor. This has worked for me wonderfully. Though you can't convert the audio directly to another compression format other than uncompressed PCM, at least your video will be compressed. Just run the .avi file through vdub and compress the audio there and direct stream copy the video. Hope this long-winded reply helps!

  6. If you want MOV to MPG, there is a free VFP for TMPGEnc which allows it to encode QuickTime to MPG.

  7. What strange and unexpected help my question turned up!

I appreciate everyone's help - I know you guys know how to convert mov 2 avi without using mov2avi.exe, but that really doesn't help me any.

You see, I don't need to convert any mov files. That's the problem of USERS of mov2avi - in which case a suggestion to use another program would be appropriate if it achieved that end. However, I am making a GUI for the command-line app mov2avi. Regardless of whether the conversion can be done with other programs, there is still much demand for a GUI for those who prefer to use mov2avi.exe, and THAT is the focus of my efforts.

At any rate, I still do appreciate the suggestions, and I want to inform everyone that I have my difficulties resolved now (thanks to James Holderness - the author of mov2avi) and that:

mov2AVIgui is now under development and a BETA will be available at the URL below in a few weeks at most...
