Then go an buy a player that converts on the fly.

Yes, it can be done through software. However the effort required and the time it takes mean it is simply not worth it. Save yourself the worry and let hardware do it for you.

Like guns1inger say. If you want to do what you say it is lots of work and you will need few progs to do it. It may be easier and cheaper to get player, but in North America it will take some search to find one.

Nice as it would be, it isn't possible to just copy and convert from PAL to NTSC and keep the navigation structure with menus, subtitles etc. Though there are several ways to do the conversion which you can find if you search this forum, it is a tedious and multi step process. This process is described in detail in other discussion threads so there is no need to repeat it here. Basically you have to convert the VOBs from PAL to NTSC and then reauthor the DVD to reconstruct menus, subtitles etc.

I really could not more strongly agree with guns1inger. It is definitely not worth it. Philips makes a variety of DVD players in the USA for about $50-60 that can convert PAL to NTSC on the fly. This means that the DVD player converts the PAL video image to NTSC so you can see it on your TV. If you will have to do the conversion for more than 1 video, just buy a DVD player and don't do the work yourself. If you want a higher quality player, Oppo makes a variety of players that can do this, but they cost about $160 or more I think.

I do not know where you want to relocate, but if you still insist to do your conversion just scroll to top of this page and highlight search "this forum" and type "pal to ntsc" in search box there are more than 45 pages on this discussion.
Mind you, you will not be able to keep everything. You will loose most of the menus, rest will be OK.
What I use for this is:
    TMPGEnc Express
    DgPulldown
    DVD Lab Pro
    Photoshop (if needed)
    Mpeg Video Wizard (sometimes)
You will also need subtitle editor for your subs.
You can also check on this:

It is free and has all the packages.

The other thing you should know about converting from PAL to NTSC is that it will cause problems with the smoothness of motion. This is most apparent on zooms and pans. This is because an extra frame is added every fifth frame. The result is the jittery look that it gives the video.

Thats why you use the DgPulldown method instead of actually changing the framerate during conversion, then you are not adding any frames and get no jerkiness....

And you can do it and keep all the extras & all menus, but it takes quite a few tools, a major disassembling/demuxing of all parts of the entire dvd, converting and complete reassembling of all files.

I have done several import dvd's that will prob. never be re-released or released in the U.S. in NTSC, and you can not tell the diff. from the original.

It is not fast, it is not simple, and it is not for the faint of heart 8)

Everyone always says, "buy a player." How many players does one person need? We've already got 4 DVD players at home (not counting 1 portable and 1 TV/DVD player combo), and only one of them can play PAL DVDs at all. And it's so jerky it's almost unwatchable.

  11. I've had many Philips and now an oppo over the years and never had regular bad picture, it does depend sometimes but on the whole if you are fussy get an oppo, no way convery anything , the time and heartache are not worth it.
Sell your dvd players on Ebay and use the money to upgrade, I did.

Unless you are prepared to spend a lot of time converting a disc, your results are likely to be just as jerky, if not worse.

So I guess the answer to your question

How many players does one person need ?
Only one - but make it a good one.

  13. If you have many PAL DVD's then buy an Oppo DVD player.
If you are cheap or only have a couple DVD's try DJRumpy's PAL->NTSC guide.

    OK
Whatever you do in TMPG do not change framerate. Make DVD Mpeg2 NTSC file, but change only resolution from 720x576(PAL) to 720x480(NTSC). You have to use advance setting, export ES (Audio+Video). Than use DgPulldown and change framerate from 25 fps to 29.97 fps of your video file.
TMPG conversion takes a while, about 4-6 hours depend on length of movie and filters you use, good idea to let it run in the morning before you go to school or over night.
