I use MSN Messenger 7.0.0813 with Windows 2000 and a Logitech webcam. I can not get it to ring when a contact calls. The box pops up indicating that someone is calling, but there is no sound. THere is a sound when someone logis in and nudges, but not when there is a call. I see in sound options that there are sounds listed for everything except calls. Any ideas how to fix this?
Also, do you prefer another chat program? I don't think I can use Yahoo because I have a capture card and there is some conflict.
    Thanks

I have almost exactly same (7.0.0816 on W2K and logitech webcam).
I dont know what you mean by "calling you"?
You must open a chat window to someone and select there "start audio conversation" to talk with that person.
If you mean using voicecall through NetMeeting, you set up incoming/outgoing sounds in the control panel > sounds and multimedia > sounds > incoming call (normally it ought be by default set to use "ringin", same as sound set for NetMeeting > Receive Call , but if you use some themes etc it could have been changed).

When I receive a video conference call (inother words, someone in my contact list invites me to join)., the box pops up but I do not hear the sound. I don't use Netmeeting, so I am not sure how changing the settings will help. For MSN Messenger the sound events that are listed are "Contact Online, New Alert, New Mail, New Meassage, New Mobile Meassage, and Nudge". All of these have sounds selected.
Does yours make a sound when you have an incoming video call?

OK, I don't really know what youre asking about, I got lost now I admit.
Either you use MSN Messenger 8.x or you got some different completely MSN Messenger 7 than me

On *my* MSN Messenger 7, whenever someone ewant to 'call' me (audio, or audio+video), I have to accept it, so it appears same as any other notification of chat message, with the same "chat" (message) sound, since I have to click there to accept it anyways.
I just tested it and thats how it works in MSN Messenger 7.xx (on mine and my friend's computers with W2K).
However, you may be thinking of MSN Messenger 8.5 for XP that has separate "voicecalls" and/or "videocalls"? I haven't play with it for ages (since I dont use XP on my machines) but I remember it had few more options there, possibly additional sound notifications?

OTOH I dont use MSN Messenger per se for voice/video calls.
For this almost all of my friends and family use NetMeeting, which is easily invoked/called within MSN Messengers. We started ages ago on Win95/98 with NM, and till today we actually haven't found better replacement for NM yet
MSN Messenger for short time was more used by us because of free phonecalls within North America few years ago, but once this ended we all went back to NM
IMHO NM has better sound and better video quality than Messenger, Skype, and any other I have tried so far - not only because of direct connections between callers (it uses ils servers only for announcing your 'existence' oon the web if you want it) but it still has more options available than any other messaging soft out there, like sharing desktop or possibility to use voice or video calls to/from mobile devices, not available on anything else... (usually you need 2 or more apps to have all the same options available in NM), maybe try it out once? It does have "incoming call" ring (you can set it up too). It doesn't look as 'cool' as ie latest Skype, but it does the best job

I am using MSN Messenger 7.0.0813 since it is the latest that will work on Windows 2000. All I am trying to figure out is how to make it ring when someone calls. I will try netmeting. I used back when I had dialup and an old webcam, but it barely worked then. Thanks for trying.

Just OT: as I pointed out earlier - I use 7.0.0816 and that is the last one for W2K.
There is no separate sound notification for audio/audio+video chat in this version.
AFAIR there never was such thing in any earlier versions either, and Im using MSN Mess since very first beta... however (IIRC) there is something like that in version 8.xx or in Live Messenger

NetMeeting worked perfect on dialup and it worked even better if you called the phone number directly (direct connection over dialup) I guess you just didnt set it up in options (default speed setting used to be for ISDN line IIRC). I remember having about 3fps on videocalls thru dialup (33.3kbps modem LOL)

I jut typed the number wrong; I am using the same version. The problem with no sound is that you can't tell if you have a call unless you are looking at the computer screen. Later versions that work with XP have a sound for incoming calls. One big downside to Netmeeting is that it does not work on XP, so I can not call my contacts that use XP with Netmeeting. Oh, well.

Anyone with XP: Start > Run > type "conf.exe" and press enter, you get NetMeeting 'back' on any WinXP.
NetMeeting is in every Windows since Windows95, its just hidden in XP because initially Msoft wanted you to use Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger and become subscriber to MSN so you'll pay for i.e. 'browse together' or 'desktop sharing' in Messenger instead of using freebie NM (I think they changed that later to free, but Im not so sure - I dont use XP as I said).

As I said at the begining, you probably mistaken Mess7 with Mess8.xx from XP.

I wonder is NM hidden in Vista too, or have they completely rid of it finally? I forgot to check it out when I was playing with Vista for short time.

conf.exe worked on my laptop with XP. However I can not log on to the Microsoft server. Under Options- General - Directory Settings is "Directory" Microsoft Internet Directory with "Do Not List my name' and "Log on to a Directory when Netmeeting Starts" are both checked. How do I change the directory or get it to log in? Thanks

There is no Microsoft servers for years - as I told you, once Msoft released XP and its Windows Messenger / MSN Messenger got so close ties to MSN and its pay features, they killed free services at that moment.
But in NM you can use any other ils or uls server (unlike with MSN Messenger). Most of real ISPs should provide one or both locator services, however Microsoft actively pushed american ISPs to quit it since 2001, so nowadays almost all of the are european and asian servers only.

iin directory server box (where there is Microsoft Internet Directory - just overtype it) type ie:
    ils.tpnet.pl
    ils.netmeeting.de

BTW: You can use NM without logging to ANY ils or uls server if you want. It work fine on direct connections (dial by IP addresses). ILS or ULS server logging is needed only if you want others to know that youre online (kinda like setting your MSN Messenger "online").
Go to options, uncheck "log in to directory server when NM starts" thats all
If you dont want your name listed its kinda pointless to log in to any internet locator servers - so definitly uncheck both.

Also set privacy encryption and secure incoming & outgoing calls, set your bandwidth apropiately (select cable only if you really have more than ~50kbps *outgoing* speed, otherwise your video you send to others will stutter badly; if you have less speed set it to faster modems, trust me). When you will share desktop or set access to your PC thru NM RemoteDesktopSharing, change the desktop to plain background (no wallpaper). It will speed up A LOT refreshing your desktop on remote computer. And dont set it to use true colors either
    have fun

oh and slide the video settings to faster instead of better - there isnt much quality difference between them, but it really is more fps in that setting
