Ok here is the deal. I kept getting "A runtime error has occurred Do you wish to Debug" almost every time i started internet explorer. I was running a clean install of xp pro sp 1a slipstreamed and it happened here and there then it got to be every page that i would visit. I searched the net for some help and found a registry tweak, an article to turn off the debug script (which pages would not even load then) and i even uninstalled internet explorer and reinstalled to no avail.

I got tired of the nagging error (and wife nagging to fix it) so I reformatted with my original version of xp pro, no sp1 or 2. It has been a week and a half and I am getting the errors again. After reformatting I only installed newest version of AVG, my zone alarm firewall, c cleaner, regcleanr, office 2003 and everest home edition. Oh and of course my printers. I have not done any updates!

Any advice on something else I could try to fix this issue? I know I am about to get hit with suggestions on using Firefox which I have no problem with using (had it in when I first starting getting the errors last time) but the wife likes Internet Explorer as well as my child.

If you really wish to go through the grief (for the love of family, I understand), download Filemon.exe and let it run while you are opening IE . You'll see which DLL is creating the problem.

aedipuss, i did have what i thought was almost all the up to date updates after I had sp1a. I mean, i did do some updates after the install of my slipstreamed sp1a. I even went to windizupdates.com while I had firefox in and checked their updates, eventhough they were the same as M$.

Redwudz, thanks for the move i thought it was ok in off topic section. Sorry bout that

I will try the filemon.exe program tomorrow just for sh--'s and giggles before i put sp2 in. I might just reformat with xp pro slipstreamed sp2 and then install autopatcher, the last one before the shutdown.

Thanks for the replies that I have got so far.

ok, I put filemon in and I must say that I am totally lost. It just kept scrolling and scrolling and scrolling. Might take me a few days to figure it out! In the mean time, any hints to what I might be looking for. I did see where there was a column that was I think status. I seen a couple FAILED. I looked at them and it made no sense to me. Three that failed were ointing to a .dll on the "desktop" that could not be found. I have no dll's on the desktop. Sorry I forgot to write it down. I will try it again tomorrow and get a snapshot of the log and post here for all to see.

  8. Personally I think your computer is infected. And you really need to run SP2 and all the updates. I'll bet your computer is Zombied by now. BTW why do you feel a need for regcleaner? I've never run something like in my life.

Of course I'm running Norton IS or AVG IS plus Spysweeper. Note that the norton IS and AVG IS both have a firewall as well as AV and AVG IS also has Antispyware and AntiSpam. There are honeytraps that just love to have a No SP or Sp1 Xp computer come bye so they can infect it. Remember that many of the search results on a search engine will be bogus malware installing sites.

  9. I would take a hard look at your hard drive, it might be failing. If you can find spinrite run it over night on the drive.

Since it keeps happening after a clean install:

Check your hard disk SMART status with a free program like Everest Home Edition 2.20.405 (last free version)

Possible corrupted MBR (virus, etc), repair it with the recovery console using your install cd, here is the link:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

Run chkdsk, fixboot and fixmbr from the recovery console

Tboniet, regcleaner lets me know what software drops what keys - if i uninstall i can check this program and make sure they were taken out. Infected and zombied by now, not sure as i downloaded avg on my other computer and put on disk and installed before i put computer back on net.
Like I said, i had sp1a in and had the problem i then had the problem a week after a clean install. I am pretty sure I slipstreamed an sp2 disk a few months ago so maybe i will try that over the weekend. I also have ad aware 2007 in and it finds nothing, i run avg every night and it finds nothing. Time to kick wife in the a-s and make her use firefox.

I will look for spinrite and check SMART status tonight after work.

Well, i gave up and reformated as of about 2 hours ago with xp pro sp2 and I will see how that goes. I am starting to wonder if it is internet explorer itself cause my father called me and he is getting the error as well. Good ole M$.

  14. My guess is that it is some kind of BHO both you and your father use.

In my instance I have one computer that IE7 and Adobe flash do not get along. A Web page with flash will always crash the browser. SO I disbaled flash. No problems. Strange is that it stays with the computer despite re-installs and different hardware. This computer runs the exact same S/W as another one that is fine. And it is fine with IE6 and flash.

SO my guess is that some BHO is the cause. Have your father go to Manage Add-ons in the tools menu and try turning them off abd see what happens. My suspicion is Adobe Flash or some bogus search helper.

Don't mean to bring up an old thread but in response to TBoneit my computer started acting up again (about 6 or 7 weeks ago) and i noticed some icons and stuff were not loading on the bottom right so i proceeded to check out adobe flash. Around that time is when my daughter started to go to Nickjr.com again. I went to their site (adobe) and downloaded the flash uninstaller and low and behold no problems after ridding computer of Adobe Flash. I then called my father and had him do the same and it rid his error also. When i get some extra time I will dig deeper into this but thought i would revisit an old thread for a few.
