I have Vegas 6 and want to make MPEG4 video.
I can see this under "make Quicktime mov" and then choose the option MPEG4 Video.

However, it renders it as a MOV file and I change the extension to MP4, but it doesn't work.
Says wrong file type or something like that.

    Any ideas anyone?

mp4 and mpeg4 video is not the same. mp4 is a container for video and audio and mpeg4 video is the video. BUt I guess you want a mp4 with mpeg4 video(divx, xvid or h264).

I don't think vegas supports the mp4 container. You can export to avi with mpeg4 video(divx,xvid,h264) and then use YAMB to make a mp4.

My version of Vegas 6 has a "Render As" option "Sony AVC/AAC (*.mp4).

Using the Default Template (Audio 128kbps 48,000Hz, AAC - Video 512Kbps, 29.97, 320x240) I get a small mp4 file. GSpot tells me "not a valid AVI File" and "Rendering failed" under Direct Show Render.

There are other templates available - I haven't had time to experiment yet. I just use it for the occasional quick check print of my project.

The file will play in VLC, but if I use the slider to jump ahead, VLC gets confused. The audio jumps ahead and plays but the video stays on the last frame and does not progress.

Thanks but my version of Vegas does not have mp4 option. (Only in the MOV prefs).
