  1. I have six computers networked. The servers is XP pro and the rest are Vista Home. On most of the computers I can go to Network and see the other computers. I can double click on those computers and they open to show the drives/ I can double click on a drive and see the folders etc.

But... on a couple of the computers when I to to network I can see the other computers but when I click on some of those computers I get the Login Screen. I can then enter a username and password and get into the drive and folders etc..

    1) Why do I get that box when trying to connect from one computer but not from another? In other words on computer A I can always browse computer C but on computer B I have login before I can browse computer C.

Also on computer B even after I login and check the "remember" button the login is not remembered. In other words when I reboot I have to login again.

    2) Why would some connections be different from others? I didn't go in and set each one up differently. I never defined this login feature at all that I know of.

    3) How do I get control over this? Is the setting in the computer that is trying to browse or in the computer that is being browsed? Where is the setting, what is it called, how should it be set, etc?

    1) Vista defaults to tighter security. I don't have basic but in a biz net environment user login is standard. This is done to protect you from an inside malware attack. If you open your net, you better have a tight firewall.

  3. The problem is I just can't figure out why I get this login box in some situations but not others. All of the Vista computers are running a Point of Sale program (they are acting as cash registers). Only two of them have this login box. When the computers are rebooted most of them are automatically connected to the server with no issue. The two problem computers simply don't connect and there is no prompt or warning they just aren't connected. I then have to go to Network and click on the server, bring up the box and log in. I need to change this. I can't expect the people who use these computers to understand and remember that they have to do this extra procedure on these two computers.

So my questions are still unanswered. Where are the settings that control these login boxes?

Have a look at the NET command:

    Code:
    net use /?

The syntax of this command is:

    NET USE
    [devicename | *] [\\computername\sharename[\volume] [password | *]]
            [/USER:[domainname\]username]
            [/USER:[dotted domain name\]username]
            [/USER:[username@dotted domain name]
            [/SMARTCARD]
            [/SAVECRED]
            [[/DELETE] | [/PERSISTENT:{YES | NO}]]

    NET USE {devicename | *} [password | *] /HOME

    NET USE [/PERSISTENT:{YES | NO}]
So what you can do is something like

    Code:
    net use \\IPADDRESS_OF_COMPUTER\sharename /USER:USERNAME_TOCONNECT_WITH PASSWORD_FOR_USER /PERSISTENT:YES
which, if you substitute your info, should give you network access to the share and this will persist over sessions.
