Just might be a stupid question but... Why are my avi catures fragged. I always have ZERO fragmentation before capturing. Then after i check the hd after, its always 100% fragged on the part of the HD that the avi went to.
Is this normal or do i have to defrag after every single dv capture?
The reason i even notied this is that the picture gets choppy on editing in premiere cs3.

You should have a 2nd internal HDD that you use just for capturing and editing etc.
This will give you better "performance" than using a single HDD system.

Im sorry , i forgot to say. I do have 2 drives. 1st (80GB) is my programs and OS, and the 2nd (300GB) is my data disk and scratch disk for editing. The 2nd drive is the one getting fragged on the avi file. Im just wondering if its supposed to capture that way. It makes sense to me that it should be a sequential capture since there is plenty of space to put it in. But when i look at the derag bar graph its all red there.

Unfortunately that can be normal for NTFS.
I get the same on my capture drives and I don't have anything else open or writing to the drive at the time (confirmed with Sysinternals Filemon and Diskmon). This includes swap space (don't keep one on that drive).
There are some "active" defraggers out there that try to take care of this when writing the file but for me they tended to get in the way (i.e. drag your performance down) for capturing and wasn't worth it.
