I am thinking about getting the westinghouse lvm or tx 47" HDTV.

the only thing holding me back between the two is the PAL compatibility (the tx series has better colors). research has shown the 37" lvm model accepts PAL through composite, and not component. i guess its safe to assume the 47" westinghouse lvm also accepts a PAL xbox through composite.

could i then assume that the TX series also accepts PAL through composite?
do most hdtvs play PAL as well?

this is a true 50hz xbox game and can only be played on a PAL xbox. i do not need to play HD PAL signals just the old PAL signal 480i or whatever it is.

seems like you guys would know the answer

Are you sure the game is 50Hz? I thought only the player was NTSC or PAL.

Never assume a US model LCD-TV will accept PAL without testing first.

i suppose i should just load up my uk xbox, take it over to best buy, and see if theyll let me try it out on their TX-47F430S

i have found a forum thread on AVSforum, and posted something similar to this. figured these two places would be THE places to ask.

the westinghouse LVM 37" will play a PAL signal, but not in component, only composite. from that, i would assume that the 47" LVM would play a PAL signal.

totally unconfirmed on the TX line of westys.

so, you are saying most HDTVs are not PAL compatible? is there something in the HDTV specs that would be a clear sign that it does or does not? i have the manuals on hand ... one sec ...

under input signal, the lvm lists

fh: 30-80 Khz fv: 50-75 Hz

    and under power lists

100-240 VAC, 50/60 Hz (auto switch), 3.5a (max)

the TX lists the same but says ntsc at the end

fh: 30-80 Khz fv: 50-75 Hz NTSC

    and under power

    100-264 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 6.0a. universal

does any of that mean anything??

Right, so the only store that has a display TX-47F430S is 3 1/2 hours away....that means i am not going to drive there...and that i also have no way of knowing if im gonna waste a bunch of money or not........this sucks

this is a huge expense, and as of right now i am not buying either one of these unless it can support this PAL xbox.

any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

I don't have a Xbox but do have an upscaling DVD player that will upscale to NTSC 1080i with component out. It will only output a PAL 720x576i signal also with component out.

I have a LVM47W1 and source info says:
    Resolution 720x576i
    H Frequency 15 KHz
    V Frequency 50 Hz

Not a complete test but there may be hope.

I don't know the trend on current sets but in the past PAL was not supported for composite on most US model TV/VCR tuners except for a few multistandard models. HD-Ready sets often supported PAL 576i scan rates on analog component. HDMI input depends on what the manufacturer allows in the port ROM.

There are two things going on here. One NTSC only analog tuners are less expensive, second and most important manufacturers want to discourage export orders from PAL countries. TV sets in the USA are far less expensive because of the value added tax and other charges in PAL countries.

Best to call the manufacturer and ask if you can't test yourself.

    @ Megahurts:

awesome, so you were watching a PAL signal on your LVM47W1? that is exactly what i needed to know. i was looking at either the lvm or the tx 47". that just sold me!
