With Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 I get the error:

Can't Activate Recorder. Try Resetting Camera.

With Nero Vision I get a similar error:

Failed to initialize capture device. Please check the device settings.

Windows Movie Maker crashes if I switch to capture mode. Clearly there is something wrong here, but what? Where do I look? It used to work fine.

    Thanks,

    -Mike

Try uninstalling the firewire port through Device Manager, then rebooting windows.

If possible, test your camera and firewire cable on another PC. If it doesn't work, change the cable. If that works, put the new cable in your machine and test. if it doesn't work in either PC with different cables then the camera's port may be the issue.

Done. Cable and camera work fine on the other computer. Used to work fine on this computer too. I suspect errant codecs more than anything else, but haven't found a program that actually works for removing bad codecs. Another thing to try would be a capture program that does some troubleshooting to figure out why it's not working, but I don't know of one. I also tried WinDV and got the message:

    Can't create CaptureGraphBuilder

I am amazed that no software has been written that examines the system to figure out why it's not working. Nor software that automatically goes through the DirectShow filters and figures out what should and shouldn't be there.

Filmerit is pretty good at finding and removing what isn't working. That said, transfer of DV is primarily a data transfer exercise, taking the data from the tape and parking it inside an avi wrapper on your disc.

Getting back to this after a while...

I tried Filmerit and indeed think it has located the problem - but how to fix it? Under Sony DV Camcorder it says:

    #Error F02 - No CLSID
    #Error F10 - No Filterdata

    Repair is grayed out.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    -Mike

Oops! Just read the instructions. :)

Ok, I deleted all things causing erros. The Sony errors come back as soon as I turn the camera back on. No change. Any other ideas?

    possible directshow problem. try this.
    http://www.riverpast.com/en/prod/dsdetective/download/

and make sure your DVavi codec is set to microsoft's. it's in the registry as something like hkey local machine/software/microsoft/windowsnt/current version/drivers32 - vidc.dvsd = msvidc32.dll if it's set to the ms codec.

    HEY GUYS...
    GOOD NEWS!!!!!!!
If you get the capture error "Can't Activate Recorder. Try Resetting Camera" and you have recently installed a codec pack...simply uninstall it and restart Adobe and try again...

Codec packs are not recommended because they cause all sorts of unexpected and unexplained problems.

  13. you could try installing the free enosoft dv package, it will replace the microsoft dv codec, which may be missing/damaged?
