Not having any luck figuring this out on my own, so I wonder if anyone has any advice.

MP4 and specifically H.264 encoding is the best format to play video on the PS3, and with Windows Media Player 10's network media sharing capability, I can view the media on my PS3 without having to copy it to the hard drive in some way (usually using an SD card).

However, since WMP10 doesn't play .MP4 files out of the box, it doesn't recognize these files as movies and share them on the network. I'm trying to get it configured so it will recognize them as valid media and share it so I can watch it on the PS3.

I've installed several versions of FFDSHOW which seemed like it would be the magic bullet for playing these files in WMP10, but it still doesn't recognize that it has a valid decoder for these files. I wonder if anyone has any advice on getting WMP10 to recognize and use FFDSHOW, or if you can recommend a different codec package. The Xvid codec worked fine in WMP10, but the PS3 doesn't play this format, and Xvid doesn't decode AVC or H.264.

I can play the MP4 files in other players, like QuickTime, just fine. The huge issue is just getting WMP10 to do it. Thanks in advanced for any advice.

FFDShow should (and does) work for most. Make sure that it is configured to decode mp4/avc through DirectShow. I believe this is turned off by default.

  3. Get Zoom Player:

I had a similar problem, I needed a particular codec and ffdshow was suppose to do the trick but it did not. You don't need to use Zoom Player but when you install it, it will install all these codecs; make sure allow it to do that during the installation. Once it is installed you will be able to use other media players. I was very impressed and I use Zoom from time to time.

Having multiple media players is always a good idea.

Awesome, Haali Media Splitter did the trick. I can play H.264 videos in WMP now.

But WMP still won't add them to its library of media. I hate WMP.
