I just installed SiSoftware Sandra. Under Hardware/Processors/Control Temperature I get a reading of 74.0c. Can I assume that that would be a more correct reading of the cpu temp than what I was getting from the bios, which was 105c or is that not an actual reading of the cpu?

still way too hot even at reduced load. intel suggests 69c as the max operating temp for that cpu. either you need water cooling or a big zalman hsf and new case fans to get rid of the heat that quickly builds up in the case preventing the cooler from working.--

Just opened the side & aimed a big 20" box fan at it. That brought the noise down of the cpu fan so that is the culprit. But after I turned the fan off & left the side open, after about 5 minutes the sound started creeping back up again.

modern fans are speed controlled to adjust for cpu temp. without the additional cooling of the box fan the temp went back up. take off your hsf and make sure it's not all clogged up with dust bunnies. also, you may need a case fan in the front blowing in and one in the back blowing out to create enough air movement.

It's sounding like you need to upgrade your CPU cooler. It's sometimes difficult to find a efficient cooler that's also quiet. But look to the noise levels. Usually below 20 dba is fairly quiet and above 30 dba is not.

Nexus fans are one of the favorites though they don't move a lot of air. Panaflo is also good. Thermalright has some of the best heatsinks. -
If my CPU was running at 74C, the noise the fan is making would be the least of my worries

John, Just curious it isn't in a E-Machine is it? If so, watch out they have a habit of eating the Motherboard and Power Supply where the fans will spin and it won't POST. If so I'd be tempted to change the power supply preventively.
MSI just make it to the specs of the computer maker and they may not even have the rights to support or sell it seperately. Or to put it another way many brand manufacturers also have a line of products that they make which are branded with the brand name of whoever they make them for.
Back in the day when VHS was king for example. I gave everybody in the family a VHS deck, at that time they several hundred dollars each too. One might have got a Panasonic, another Maganvox and RCA and a couple of other brands. Whichever was on sale the week when I bought it. They all looked alike and had the same features and were made by the same manufacturer. Same sort of deal as your Mobo, it was OEMd for the computer maker.
OT: Anybody else remember buying VHS tapes for $18 each on sale?
Edit for content and spelling -
The computer I have been talking about is a brand called MEDION and I bought it at BEST BUY. The price I paid for all that I got was rather amazingly low for the time. No way I could have built something myself at that price point.
I was thinking of buying a new computer case ... something with a lot of fans ... maybe look into a new heatsink/fan solution ... but by the time I do all that ... might as well replace the mb/cpu to something faster.
Although this computer ain't exactly slow ... might be worth "fixing it up" and then turn it into a 2nd computer (like a media player for my TV) when I do get around to buying something faster.
It's working hot or not so I'm not gonna worry about it until I can save up some money which might be a while LOL
At least it's gonna start getting cold soon ... actually been on the "cold side" last couple of days. I had to actually turn down the A/C because I was COLD and that hasn't happened in months.

John, Depending on your present computer, some of the newer MBs and CPUs might give you a big boost in performance for not too many $$. A micro ATX MB with onboard video, a dual core CPU with factory cooler that runs reasonably cool, along with DDR2 memory is not too expensive. Then just a upgraded case and you should be able to use the rest of your drives.
