Output files always have .264 extensions!!!!!

Hellow, I'm currently having that issue here. I never had that thing before and now all my output files are in .264 which I can't find a program to play on.

In my encoder, it says

Output Summary

Codec: H.264
Container: MatRoska

etc etc and etc

I want my files to be in .mkv but can someone explain this why is it showing me .264 extensions?

are we to guess your encoder and the settings used?

you could open with mediainfo and see if it's a matter of a wrong extension.

you can mux a raw stream to mkv yourself with mkvmerge of mkvtoolnix
