  1. I've thought about adding hd-dvd along with my PS3 blu-ray to maximize my hollywood offerings since dreamworks (now hddvd exclusive) makes some of my favorite movies. But I've had bad experiences with Toshiba (dvd recorder stopped working in a few months due to an "error code" and an older dvd player was too picky with media).

So where's the other hd-dvd players at? At least Blu-ray has Samsung, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, and of course Sony to pick from. So much talk about hd-dvd players prices, but there's no other similar priced option besides Toshiba! (I wont get a basic xbox 360 + hddvd addon)

There is the LG combo player. Aside from that, it's Toshiba. The Toshiba HD players have been reliable.

  3. Samsung's new combo player comes out later this year.

Onkyo has announced an upcoming HD DVD player, too.

The 3rd gen Toshibas are out next month, and great deals on HD-A2 and HD-A20 can be had now.

I've got both (an HD-A2 and a Samsung BD-P1200 Blu-ray player). My HD-A2 has been a rock solid, excellent performer. It's really great having the ability to watch high def discs in either format.

I've been thinking about this for the past month - standalones are pretty much all Toshiba.

You could probably get the XBox HD add on, rip to PC and then stream to PS3. It seems an awfully convoluted way of doing it but at UK prices, I'd save about £150 this way. There might even be a linux hack to plug the HD DVD directly into the PS3 via USB in a few months - work in progress.

I very nearly ended up buying the HD add on to test this weekend but girlie confiscated my cc after my Quad core splurge

  5. RCA used to make one, I don't know if they still do. I don't know why anyone would choose RCA over Toshiba though.

Just curious........have you ever burned video files to a blank DVDR and tried to play them in either player?
I've heard that you can burn AVCHD m2ts files as recorded from an AVCHD camera to a blank DVDR and they will play on a Blu-Ray player. I'm assuming the same thing can be done with VC-1 files burned onto a DVDR and played back on an HD-DVD player? How about HDV mts files (Mpeg-2 TS 25 mbps), could they be burned as is onto a blank DVDR and be able to be played back on either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD players?

I have no interest in Hollywood movies, but I do a lot of Hi-Def content of my own............
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........
