  2. Yeah, basically you just fill the disc with divx files and the player will be able to play them. Read your manual and it should tell you what other formats it'll play.

You should also be able to play most Xvids. But you need to ensure that your Divx or Xvid videos are compliant with set top Divx players. This thread may help you: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic335362.html#1742222

You burn Divx files as data discs, either CD or DVD. ImgBurn does this in 'Build' mode for DVDs.

At the very least, a DVD player capable of playing DivX AVIs should be able to play DivX AVIs, and possibly MPEG videos, as well as MP2/MP3 files. If it's fairly recent, it should also be able to play Xvid AVIs, and may even support subtitles and multiple audio tracks.
(DivX and Xvid are roughly the same; it's just that some of the older players apparently looked at the FourCC of the AVI and refused to play the AVI if the FourCC wasn't one of the ones DivX uses.)

However, there may be some limitations on the DivX/Xvid AVIs your player will accept, including the resolution, bitrate, whether or not the AVI has been encoded using packed bitstream, GMC, or QPEL. VBR MP3 audio also may or may not cause problems. Which DVD player do you have?

Yes, you should generally be able to write as many AVIs as you can fit to a data CD or DVD. Your player may not like certain types of media (CD/CD-RW/DVD+ or -R/DVD-RW) as well, however. You might also have to burn the data disc using ISO+UDF format. If possible, you might want to burn a test disc using a DVD-RW and see if it'll work. If it doesn't, you won't necessarily have wasted a disc.
