    Hi,

I captured an old concert from VHS to MPEG2 DVD on my pc.
Now i want to restore the quality to make it as good as possible so it looks like original DVD.
The only problem is i'm not good in finding good filters and settings in virtualdub mpeg2.
Can you guys please help me?
    This is how it looks:

I also have an xvid of a few seconds on how it looks. Not all parts are that dark.. there are also much lights and lighter stuff!

That actually looks pretty damn good.

I should probably warn you right now that you even while you may get a very good result, you will never--I mean never--get DVD-quality out of regular VHS, no matter how pristine the source is. You could get close with Super-VHS, but definitely not with regular VHS; the format just doesn't have it in it for that kind of quality.

I would be very proud of that transfer, personally. If you burnt that to DVD that would be a very good transfer indeed. If anything I would try knocking down the saturation only slightly, but from what I see, you shouldn't have very many problems with bleeding, if any.

CubDukat said it, it looks good. You say that you want it to look like an original DVD. Keep in mind that most consumer VHS players acheive about 240 lines of resolution (if you are lucky). You say that it is an old concert, so camera technology, pre & post equipment and dub's may have effected the quality of your tape. You can never truly achieve anything greater than your video source...that damn GIGO again...if you wish to get the best encoding possible it will need to be processed pre-capture with TBC's, proc-amps and correctors. Anything you do post-capture will only add noise and will never make it look like a DV-Pro Cam tape. But do keep in mind that media of the era does capture a mood or feel, sometimes it is what makes the viewer relate. Keep up the great captures!

Most of the noise won't be visible on your TV, but if it is, a run through peachsmoother with fairly mild settings will calm it down.

    I think I understand what you're saying...

It's sort of like how I love watching 80s horror flicks from VHS tapes on an old TV.

The "feeling" is better than using DVDs instead.

Hmmm....no, I meant those non-colorized versions of Cassablanca or Gone with the Wind...but if reruns of Mad About You on a 21" curve screen does it for you...
