create songs using existing sounds

i want to create my own songs/sounds using existing songs. i have already cut my own song to the length that i want it then i want it to fade out but still play in the background while i use my own sound (.wav). So in brief i want to mangage my own music does anyone know what software i can use for this. It would be a huge help! thanks

You could try the freeware audio editor Audacity.

Now i've just got to find a way of saving it so it will play in windows media player, any suggestions?

WMP should play WAV or MP3 audio.

when i save the file in audacity it saves as an aup file

You have to export the audio when you are done. The AUP file is an audacity project file.

Look under the File menu for Export as Wav or Export as MP3. To use the MP3 option you need to have LAME MP3 installed.
