i have somewhat a similar prob so i thought this wud be the best thread to post it...
i burnt an avi movie on my first dvd+rw....moser baer dvd+rw (4x/4.7GB) at 4x.
the movie plays perfectly from the dvd+rw when played on my pc using windows media player 11.
the prob occurs when i try to play it on my Philips DVP 642K dvd player.
its actually a two part movie ie.2 avi files.
i burnt them as a data dvd on the dvd+rw.
the dvd player completely skips part1 and starts part2 fine, but after exactly 21secs into part2, it freezes for 2secs, jumps to 43secs on the indicator, stops and then gives a 'DISC ERROR'.
i have already made the dvd player region free (ie.after doing the sequence, i saw a 0 in the lower left corner of my tv).
i am able to play the same two part avi movie on the dvd player when burnt as a data cd on a Sony CD-RW (4x/650MB).
so i know its not the avi movie.
this is the 1st time i have tried writing a data dvd and this is my 1st dvd+rw.
what cud be wrong here?
it cudnt be the dvd+rw either coz the movie from the dvd plays fine on my pc without any freezes or skipping.
i have read a lot of posts including this one about the codec prob: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic319773.html?highlight=dvp 642
but thats not case with me since the prob with him was playing data discs and nothin to do especially with dvd+rw data dvds.
can anyone plz help me with this peculiar prob?
thanx in advance.

Most likely a media issue. While the 642 has few issues with media (at least the 2 I have), I have had a few occurances of media in which it had read issues. Just try a different brand/type of media.

The fact that a disc plays fine on your PC does NOT mean that a DVD player won't have a problem with the media. It COULD be your media. Knowing what brand of disc you used would be good. I recommend Verbatim DVD+RW discs. It's a long story, but there are many reasons why discs will play fine on PCs and not on DVD players.
Download Gspot and look at your video. Any of the following settings will cause playback problems on the DVP-642:
1) Packed bitstream.
2) QPel (Quarter pixel)
3) GMC
4) Video bitrates higher than 2000 Kbps
5) Resolutions greater than 720x576
The Sony DVD player may not care about some of the things I listed above, but they are all potential problems on the Philips DVP-642. -
If the same file(s) play OK when written to CD-R, but not when written to DVD+RW, I think you can safely narrow it down to:
- Media problem. Your player doesn't like the DVD+RW disk. This could be "Doesn't like DVD+RW at all" or "Doesn't like this specific make of DVD+RW disk"
- Simply a bad burn.
